    Default Yardage

How do I estimate (and cut) yardage for backing and batting?

Here's a good video to help you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2KHU2ovLig

If you are machine quilting you need to allow about 6-8 inches of batting and backing around the edge of your quilt top. This is especially beneficial if you are sending your quilt out to be long-armed quilted.

If you are doing free-motion quilting on a domestic machine you may not need as much excess fabric, but keep in mind the quilting process will tend to tighten things up and a little bit may result in your backing not coming to the edge of your top if there isn't enough to 'give'.
