Default Need help with Size of square for 9 Patch

I want to make a 9 patch so that the finished size is 12". I thought 5-1/2" patches would do it, but that is not quite enough for 12". I Need suggestions.

Pat, if you have true 5 1/2 inch charms and take an exact 1/4 inch seam, your 9 patch block will be 15 inches.
A lot of the charm packs are just 5 inches, so by taking 1/4 inch seams you would wind up with a a 13 1/2 inch block.

A 4 1/2 inch charm square would give you a 12 inch finished block.

Sandy is correct....Your squares should be cut 4 1/2" and you will be sewing 1/4" seams, leaving you with a finished block of 12".

A quick way to calculate how big your squares should be is this: take your desired block size (ie, 12"), divide that by 3 (since you're wanting a 9 patch--that would be 3 rows by 3 columns), then add 1/2" for your seam allowances. That gives you 4 1/2". Isn't it amazing we need to use math to do our creative quilting???

Thanks so much Friends! I knew y'all knew this information off the "top of your heads" If I had sat for a few min., I might have come up with Martha's formula. I could not find what I wanted in charm packs or other in the prints I wanted. Sooo I bought fabric. I can cut them the size you have given me the instructions for and come out with a 12" block.

    Again, Thanks everyone.

I like buying fabric (vs precuts) because there's usually leftovers. And then those go in my stash for future use!!!
