Default Mitered Corner Border - Help Needed

Hi. I am new to quilting and seem to have gotten in a little over my head. I am working on a table topper that has mitered corners (basically rectangular with clipped corners), see attached pic. I need to sew on the green and red borders, but I'm not sure where to start. Can someone help me? I need directions.

It's been a while since I've used mitered corners, but I can tell you a couple of things to get started.

You need to sew the red and green strips together before attaching to the quilt top. The red and green strips together are treated as one piece.

To get the length of each strip, you'll measure the side of the quilt, and add at least the measurement of the 2 top and bottom borders, but I can't remember exactly how much to add? This is the step someone else can be more specific with.

Then when you sew one side of the border on, you'll stop and start your seam 1/4 inch from the edge of the quilt top corners.

This doesn't include how to sew the corners together, but it'll get you started at least.

You will need to add the width of your borders to each end of the borders to accommodate the wide borders. I would apply the corner borders first. Then add the sides. One thing you need to do when sewing on the borders is to stop sewing 1/4" from the end of the center quilt section then when you sew your mitered border together, it will lay smooth where you joined them, especially where the border and the center meet. I'm not sure what the angle is for this kind of miter, probably half on 45 degrees--22.5 degrees? Not exactly sure how to measure this. I would eyeball the mitered seam line with the wrong sides up, pin each seamline. Then I would make sure every one of your corner sections measures the same length, then you would know you were correct in where you placed your seam lines.

You've picked a tricky border application for a first project! Good luck with it!

I just did this yesterday for the first time....I youtubed it and found a lady that did an excellent tutorial on it in three min! Her name was Ruth Jensen. My problem was with the math. I didn't need math with her tutorial.
