    Default D9P Stadium Quilt

This is the large stadium quilt that DH surprised his friend Rick with today. It's a disappearing 9 patch sewn entirely by machine including the binding. The fabric is Collections for a Cause Mill Book Series Circa 1852 from Moda. I used charm packs. The batting is Dream Poly. This batting is advertised to be 1.5 times warmer than down. I really liked working with it; it isn't puffy, has a nice drape, and it IS warm.

This is the first larger quilt (70" x 82") that I've quilted on my new machine and frame. I may have to make another for myself because I was beginning to think I'd like to keep it. Rick is the tall fellow on the right in the first picture. The look on his face when he found out this is his quilt was priceless.

Remember to ALWAYS smile, it will do one of 3 things
    1. Bring a smile to someone else's face
    2. Make them wonder what you are up to
    or ....
    3. Scare them

That is really pretty! I bet he was thrilled to death! When I made quilts for all the grandkids a couple years ago, I was worried that the oldest, who was 17, would not like that. He liked his more than any of the others did!!! He uses it daily. Now that he lives in his own apartment, he may need another.

Since you're always on my mind can you straighten out the mess up there?

I used a new-to-me method to machine sew the binding. I attached it to the front of the quilt as usual, but didn't press it away from the quilt. Then I made sure I overlapped the stitching line with the folded edge of the binding on the back and pinned it about every 1 1/2". Then, back to the front to stitch in the ditch and catch the binding on the back. It was slow sewing but still much faster than sewing the binding down by hand. By not pressing the binding away from the quilt, it gently rolled back over the SITD on the front so any crooked stitches were covered.

Beautiful quilt. That smile is indeed worth all the effort that went into the quilt :-)
