    Default What is Shirting?

Maybe I missed it, but just what is different about shirting fabric? I have some and the only difference I notice is it is usually a white or cream background with mostly lighter prints.

I found a cool article on it. I was thinking men's wear when you asked.

Usually, shirting is of finer thread and a bit lighter than what's sold for quilting. You can quilt with it though and it washes up soft. Especially if you're cutting your pieces from well worn shirts.

Chambray is really a very lightweight denim, believe it or not. It's usually stashed with the denim if the store has it and the clerks know what it is.

It is a little thinner than quilting cotton. I used it when I made Mossy Oak bags, because that was the only fabric that had that pattern. It is fine to use in quilts if you want to.

The term "shirting" is also used by quilters to designate the pattern found on cotton quilting products. Like you said, most of the time it is a light background fabric that has a small print that pretty much disappears when you step back from the quilt. So, any cotton quilting fabric with that pattern could be considered "shirting" fabric.

Hi Carolyn, I wrote a comprehensive detailed dress shirt fabrics guide that covers pretty much everything (fabrics related). And it is still quite fresh. So, if you are interested, check it out.

That's what I thought too at first. Where'd they get to, they haven't posted for ages.
