Default Need help computing fabric and design PLEASE!!

    Hi!
I just received a call from a friend who wants to make a quilt for her new grand baby. She has never quilted and lives about 3 hours from me! So I am helping via skype for now!

She wants to make a crib size quilt in a chevron pattern using a cream background fabric and alternate the colors of green and purple as the solid colors. She also wants to put a border on the quilt top in a deeper purple.

She estimates the crib size needed to be about 36 x40 or there about! Will go larger if needed.
She would like the HST blocks to be about 5 inches or so in size but is open to suggestions!

She is using cuddle fabric for the backing fabric!

Can someone help me figure out how much she will need of each fabric??
    The cream background
    The green chevron
    The purple chevron
    And the border fabric
    And binding!

I don't have any patterns for chevron or I would go to mine.
    Any and all suggestions welcome!!!
And thank you all in advance for your help as always!

Here is one that used strips sewn in pairs. If she is only going to use two colors, I would buy 1 1/2 of each color. crazy mom quilts: how to make a zig zag quilt (without piecing triangles!)
Quilters never die, they just go batts.

I've made them both ways, and just want to caution that using this method gives you bias on the entire outer edge - be sure to starch very well. Even with starching, it was a pain to sandwich but luckily I was able to quilt out the bad areas! I love chevron quilts and will gladly use the triangle method any day! just wanted to mention it!

Are you sure she wants to make 5" HSTs? That way, she only gets 4 coloured zigzags (you need two rows of each colour for the chevron, so one zigzag would be 10" (or 9" finished).

If she wants the 5" HSTs, I would probably start with two 6" squares and later square them up. Per row you'll need 4 squares each (8 HSTs per row), so you'll need a total of 16 squares in the two colours and 32 for the background. You should get 7 squares per strip, which means you'll need 1/2 (18") yard for the colours and a yard (36") from the background fabric. Just to make sure I'd get some more of each fabric, you never know what might happen!

Jenny has a chevron quilt made with Layer Cakes, it's big, but she said it could be made with charm squares. The tutorial is on you tube.

My dd made her's this way and it is so wonky. She never finished it. If she squres it off it will become a baby quilt.

    Try this one maybe.

She mentions in the comments how much fabric she bought.

She decided to get fabric and picked up a baby chevron quilt pattern. She decided on cuddle fabric for the back.
She is sending me the fabric to serge and wash in advance of our quilting weekend in October!
Thank you all for your help. She loved the suggestions you made!
    You guys are the best!
