Default Why can't you trim HST like this?

I have the JT perfect square perfect piecing ruler. I want to make HST with charm packs. It seems to me it would be easier to trim them to size (after the initial cut on center diagonal) before pressing them open, then you only have to trim 2 sides, and press open last. Would this work? I have never seen directions like that but to my brain it sounds simpler. Anybody do it this way?

I think it was NY Sue that talked about doing it that way. It makes sense as long as you don'stretch it as you press it open afterward.

I think Bonnie Hunter does it that way--you might check her blog.

I use Quiltinaday's Triangle Square-up Ruler. Here's a video with Eleanor demonstrating the usual way people square them. Then she shows you the fastest way which is what you are talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I-U_ZYcXH8

I have done my trimming this way, then iron them open VERY CAREFULLY, Eleanor Burns does it this way and uses a wooden iron or finger press instead of a steam iron, especially on small HSTs. I made my first block with perfect points in her class using her method! I was so excited! I had to give her a hug!

I use the Quilt in a Day's Triangle Square Up ruler too - works great! You just trim 2 sides.

I have done it like this as well - just be sure to measure with a straight line along your SEAM line - not the edge of the fabric!
