For a double Irish chain, you would be making two different blocks. The first part has mostly chain pieces and some background. You can sew strip sets for each of the five columns and then cut them into 2.5" segments.

The second part has one 6.5 x 10.5"" rectangle in the middle, two 2.5" x 6.5" background rectangles on the sides, and four jelly roll squares on the corners. You can make strip sets for the side background/ jelly roll pieces and then cut them to 2.5" segments.

With one jelly roll, you can probably get a 5 x 6 block configuration (15 chain blocks, 15 alternate blocks).

One other thing.... you can either make this totally scrappy with the jelly roll, or you can make the green center chain from the lighter strips and the red outer chains from the darker strips of the jelly rolls.

    I hope this helps!

If you're a beginner, I would start with a single Irish chain, first.
I actually gained a lot more confidence, after I did a baby quilt. Simple strip piecing...
The double and triple chain leaves me a little 'dizzy in the head'.
    But that's just me.
    Baby steps...
I really need to get off the exclamation point.
It may give people the idea that I'm bright and cheerful all the time....

Thank you ladies for the double Irish Chain tips, I'm going to start it very soon, I've got a couple of different greens and white background. I can't wait to get started. I like a challenge, so I'm going for the double! triple????!! Not seen that one, I have seen one similar I liked, I'm not really sure but I think it was a 'Mexican Star' pattern. It was also quite nice. I want one with a lot of white to use a fun quilt pattern. Thank you!

Eleanor Burns has an older but teriffic tutorial on the triple irish chain. I would have goofed it up bigtime, but I followed her techniques and it worked out great! This tutorial was done with her "talking to a four year old" voice, but she has a partner in this one so it isn't too hard to take. Her technique for building strip sets for the double and triple keep you on the right track.

This is mine, as yet unquilted. Need to get on it as soon as costume season is over!
