Default This is what I used for Baptist Fan

These pics are kind of raggedy, but if I keep trying to make it pretty, I'll never get it posted!.

This is what I used to do the Baptist fan pattern. I had purchased a stencil, but it was too small for most any quilt of size.

This ruler, as some of you already know when trying to use a rotary cutter, is thick and most everything I tried to mark it with was too thick and pencil leads broke too often, so I switched to the washable markers and just pressed down on each slot and it marked pretty well. Once I got the method down, it went pretty fast.

I taped every other slot closed so I wouldn't get confused. I drew a line to keep the ruler in a straight line and tried to get each row 1/2 fan over from the last. There was a lot of fudging go on, but it worked out.

If you need an explanation of any of this....let me know, I'll try to help.

Where is the picture of the Baptist Fan quilt? I missed it.

Nevermind. I found it. I love the Red and White quilts. They are classic.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just had that ruler in my hands yesterday (50% off quilting notions @ Joanns) but couldn't decide if I really needed it or not. Wow, stopping today to pick it up for sure! I had seen your baptist fan quilting and loved it. Thanks for sharing your method, brilliant!

I never thought to use that ruler for anything other than circles. Clever you for thinking outside the box and thanks for posting.

Wow. I would have never thought to use that. Looks like a whole lot of work but it sure was beautiful when done.

I'm not the most patient person, BUT, i can be stubborn. It's like everything else in quilting....the more you do it, the easier it gets. The marking became easier and easier as I went a long and the FMQ was some of the easiest I've tried, because it was not hit and miss or guessing which way to go next. It took the stress out of the pattern.

I do have some quilters try-out paper that I'm going to TRY to make a more permanent, longer, wider type stencil. Trouble is, I probably would want a bigger fan for bigger quilts and with this ruler, I can "eyeball" another slot onto each.....Ain't nothin easy or works for every job!

I didn't invent this method, using this ruler. I saw it somewhere else in a blog. I just made it work for me.

I'm looking for an easier way to mark this, so if anybody comes up with something please let me know!
