    Default Binding question

Before finding your forum I found myself winging it without a clue. I have a quilt that I was planning on binding using sort of the same technique used in the Flannel baby quilt (bring the back fabric around to the front to bind). Can I use the same technique to finish my quilt? If so how do I calculate the size of the back fabric so that I don't ruin my quilt by 'winging' it? Is it as simple as having the same excess all the way around?

I haven't used this technique yet, but I remeber reading about it at Quilting in the Rain, Jera's, blog. She has some nice tutorials!
