Default Block magazine / Jacob's ladder question

Hi I was just wondering in the Block Magazine about the yardage the Jacob's ladder quilt takes. Because inside says it takes 1-3/4 yds of each color but then in the back or glossary it says 3 yds of each for the quilt top. Side note I just love the Block magazine thanks so much.

    Hi Abigail,
Thanks for letting us know about this. The pattern info is correct at 1 3/4 yard of each color. The Index is suggesting too much fabric. Which could be a good thing if you want a bigger quilt! I hope this helps, Thanks again for letting us know!

I just started cutting this out, using 1 3/4 yards.

In step one it said to cut 11 5" strips of each color, then subcut into 86 5" squares of each color. yielding 171 HST
Then in step two it says to subcut into 86 5" squares of each color. yielding 171 4 patch

When I subcut the 11 5" strips I end up with 88 squares of each color.

What am I missing? I really want to end up with the size stated (68x73 I think it was)

You are 2 squares ahead, you have the 86 called for, the other 2 are just the extra from one strip.

    I'm still missing something.

Do I want to use 86 squares to make the HST and 86 to make the 4 patches? Or do I make 43 HST and 43 4 patches?

you use 43 squares of each color (86 total) to make the HSTs. Then you use the remaining 43 squares of each color (86 total) to make the 4-patches.

It's not just you. I had to read the instructions twice to figure it out. It's not written real clearly.

    Thanks!

It didn't help that I counted the squares in the quilt diagram and came up with 60 some of each. LOL!
