Magnetic purse closures cost more than the purse

So I'm working on duplicating a small wallet with cell phone pocket for a friend. Got the material for pennies - ok - $1.50 for a fat quarter from Hancocks and I'm using less than half of it. But then I tried to buy the magnetic bag closure both from Michaels and Amazon and they cost almost $5.00 each! I guess on a bigger purse it might be worth it but on these little wristlets and wallets the clasp more than doubles the cost. What are my alternatives for an easy closure? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Velcro, zipper, buttons, snaps????? Nothing is optimal.

I think I got mine at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby and they were a package of 4 or 6 and I don't think they were $5 for the package. Looks like they also sell them singly - magnetic snap : Shop | Joann.com

If those don't work for you, let me know what color you want and I will send you one....I think I have all colors.

I bought some on etsy under supplies. I don't remember them being expensive.

I would get the large sew on snaps. You can get them at Joann's and they are often on sale or use a coupon. Dritz® Sew-On Snaps - Size 10 4/Pkg & snaps, hooks & eyelets at Joann.com. They are $5.49 but you get 4 sets!

I either use sew in snaps like what was mentioned or velcro. If you are making wallets, I have been told if you plan on putting credit cards in them you should not use magnetic snaps. I do use magnetic snaps for purses. I get them on sale or with a coupon at Joanns.

Most of my bags have a loop and button closure.

I bought some magnetic strip and cut it into a circle, the size that I wanted. Then when I put it in, I just sewed around it so it would stay in place. This way I have plenty of the strip left for other projects.

I buy my magnetic closures at Joanns, but not in the sewing/button section. Look around and over behind the craft section, there is a row or two for making purses and the supplies needed. I but those, a two back for $1.98. Much cheaper than the ones in sewing notions, and they come in a variety of colors too!

I was afraid of what the magnet would do to my smart phone. Do magnets affect them like they do computers?

Nothing to mine either. I have a small wallet that has a spot right in front for my phone and it is where the magnet is....hasn't affected it at all.

I sometimes use a ponytail elastic and a large button. sew the elastic into one seam and loop it around the button.

I did buy a lot of magnetic snaps on ebay a long time ago. got 25 or so for a really good price. Still have quite a few.

Thank you everyone for your speedy replies. I told my gf you guys would come through on this . These are all great ideas and I may decide to try each of them on different wallets. Ilivetocraft2 - that was a very generous offer- thank you!. For now I think I'll get to Joanne's. Or maybe use the button idea cause I was going to use an envelope flap and sew a big fake button on it anyway. I can't get over how good you all are to complete strangers (me). Hoping for a chance to pay it forward to you all. Thanks to everyone! - Lilly
