Default Weighted Sensory Processing Quilt/Blanket for Emerson

I wanted to share one of my newest projects with everyone. My soon to be 3 yr old Grand-daughter (we are adopting her in April) has been diagnosed with Sensory Processing disorders. Some of the affects of this are nightly Thrashing of her body while she sleeps. Constant rocking on the couch, such as back and forth with her head. and many other symptoms. One of the things they have found is that a weighted blanket/quilt is a calming affect on the person. these are used for Autism and many other ailments such as anxiety, depression etc. Well with research we found them to be very expensive. So of course in my very craft mind, I said well I can MAKE that! There is alot of information on the internet and lots of directions on how to do this. They are filled with a poly pellet. You go by height and weight and use a certain percentages etc...Well I happened to have a few UFO's sitting around and took Emerson to my bin and said which one do you like..she got to help make it! Picked her own ruffle trim to match also. ( I hate adding those on..) but here are some of the results of our project..a 5lb weighted (Grammy Blanky )Quilt. I think I have found a new calling as we are now designing one for her to use while in her car seat as well! I can not believe with all the research we have done, how many folks suffer with this syndrome and cant afford to have these due to price. We are now in connection with her OT's group and she gave me a couple folks names who want them already!

Dear Lvngrammy, Your grandaughter is darling and so lucky to have you!! I was a sped teacher and used to make weighted vests for the kiddoes that needed them. They really make a difference and they didn't look half as cute as your quilt. Please give Emerson a big hug from us. Linda

First off....what a dolly lil' cutie pie bug!

I really love this quilt. The ruffle adds so much, it's perfect! I would like to know more about these quilts. What exactly gives them the weight and how is it made?

The quilt is as beautiful as your granddaughter. I hope this works out for you and the other children you will be helping.

I think the weight comes from the poly-pellets that you can find in the store for giving weight & shape to stuffed animals. Unlike beans, rice, etc. they are washable. They are not cheap, but if you know you are going to be making a lot of these, you can buy in bulk and that will reduce the price.
I am interested in how she inserted them into her quilt! I have a couple of ideas, but I think I'd need to have a clean & empty vacuum cleaner bag in to recapture all of the wayward pellets while I worked out the best way!

It's a great idea and super cute! Good job!
