    Help!!! Solids, back or front?

I cut up my beautiful grey bella soild and now i don't know what is the front or back. Is there any tips or tricks to tell the front from the back, or does it matter? i have an uncut piece that i know which is front and back because it still has the selvage edge on it, i can't really tell a difference between them. But is it going to matter later on when i wash the quilt where some pieces will be "fronts" and some "backs", will they have a different feel or look?

Has anyone else ever had this problem? what did you do? Or does it matter? I have only been quilting for about a year and a half, and am still hesitate about some of these things, so any suggesstions and help will truely be appriciated... Thanks-ee Bunnyb

Some fabrics are made that way. I've seen Jenny say in tutorials that she really likes them because it does not matter which side you use. It seems to me that Bella Solids would be nice enough that it wouldn't. I'm pretty sure if you can't tell, no one else will be able to. Peace.

I put a link to this in the "Ask the MSQC girls" forum to see what they say.

I have that problem with many of the solids that I work with. Once I cut off the selvedge and iron it I can't always tell right from wrong. I used to stress but now I figure if I can't tell, no one else is going to be able to either.

I don't think it matters. They are both the same.

You paid for both sides so go ahead and don't worry especially as they are both the same!

If you can't tell the difference, no one else can either. Just go for it. It will be fine.

I just used white Bella Solid and I couldn't tell which was the right side versus the wrong side. So,, I guess if you can't tell the difference, then there isn't a difference!

I agree also and on some fabrics, the back looked to me to be prettier than the front...I used the back!

Oh goodness! You all are such great help! Thank you! It's true, the bella solid is the same on both sides, so you don't have to worry about what side you use! Hope this helps clarify. You all have a great week!!

I agree with the others that it probably won't matter.

For future quilts, if you want to pick a side and stick with it, mark what you want to be the backside with chalk pencil BEFORE you cut it. You will have to keep in mind what size you are cutting and draw lines close enough that you get a little of the chalk on each piece. For instance, if you are cutting strips, sewing them, then recutting, you only need to mark one end. I do this with batiks and it makes it much easier than examining each piece as I come to it.
