    The back of quilts~

Hi , I'm new to posting here , and just thought of a question that's been driving me nuts since I started quilting (which isn't a REAL long time ago).

I have read things like "Well the back looks crappy but I don't care , the front looks great" .. and many variations of that same thing. LOL

My question is this .. am I MISSING something?? Isn't the back a mirror image of whatever you do on the front?

I want mine to look good front AND back , you know , what if someone flips it over? LOL Seriously , when I first started quilting , I thought
it was all about just the front looking good. *shrug*

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hope you're all having a grand day :-)

I think a mirror image, ie. piecing the exact same front and back, would be nearly impossible to quilt perfectly...every corner, every seam, etc. would have to perfectly match up...not happening in my world!

I like a nice printed back so that the quilting does show up, but not so much so as to show any mistakes!

There are some very nicely pieced backs you can do without making the front exactly the same...I like using left over blocks!

Do you mean the quilting? Yes, the front and the back quilting should both look great. Otherwise there's something wrong with the thread tension.

We'd love to see some of your quilts, BTW!

Oh I'm sorry! I meant the quilting itself.. I wouldn't even attempt a front and back identical LOLOL

Cyndi yes, that's what I meant , the actual quilting itself.
I've not made much!! But I think I might be able to post a picture.. still kind of
getting the hang of moving around the boards!

I think you are thinking of cross stitching that is suppose to be a mirror image of the front. I also want my back to look as perfect as the front and I try my best but sometimes no matter how much I try I get a bump, or a tuck or it does no lay as flat as I want. You just have to be able to kind of go with the flow lol.

If you want the back to look as good as the front, I recommend either a walking foot (for straight stitching), or lots of practice for FMQ. It's amazing how you can go from so-so to great with a little more practice. I kept at it and one day I noticed no more "eyelashes"! I was thrilled! I think a lot of people are very afraid to try (or afraid of failure). They will never know if they don't try!
