    Gingham block

As you can see, I posted a couple of the Gingham blocks - couldn't decide between red and blue so made both. I am lost on what week we are supposed to be on, just working my way through the book as I find time.

These are the 6" blocks, and I found it really helpful to use a strip piecing technique to make them. Instead of cutting lots of 1 1/2" squares, I cut 1 1/2" strips from my charm squares, 3 dark ones, 3 light ones, 6 medium ones. I sewed these strips into sets, using the order from the directions. Then I cut 1 1/2" strips from those sets and sewed those together to finish the block. This method feels easier to me, and helps with accuracy as well.

Another thing I am finding with these small blocks is that I don't press seams until the block is finished. I find it is easier to just lightly finger press and nest seams as I go.

Wow, really, I can't imagine not pressing, but then I starch everything really well and I am kind of new to quilting so still working on the seam allowance thing. I really loved your blocks. Thanks for sharing your method. I haven't got there yet. Spring has sprung on the farm and I am behind.

    About this Group

This group will be our meeting place for a sew-a-long for Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage book. We can use this meeting place to share our blocks, ask questions, seek help, and encourage each other.

I'm excited to get started with these blocks and hope to meet others interested in the same.

Now is the time to get your book and fabrics together for a January 2017 kick off!
