Where do I post for help with Basic Learning How to Quilt, What tools needed?

I posted in here eariler, but it's gone -- Please tell me where to post my very new to this questions about Quilting.

Batting - since I live in Arizona I suspect Low-Loft?

Backing - Ok I guess this is 108" type fabric

Thread - Any old cone (poly covered cotton works?)

I'm sorry if I am not putting this in the RIGHT spot, but I do want to learn

    thanks

No worries about WHERE you post, it's more important THAT you post Questions would generally go in here though, so no worries. I'm not much of a help in the way of what's better, but I know low-loft batting is pretty popular all over, backing fabric is generally the larger, 108" fabric, but you can make a pieced backing using just regular cotton if you like Thread is generally what works best with your machine (for some it's coats & clark, some it's gutermann, some aurifil, some take whatever they can get lol I generally use gutermann because it's readily available in my area and my machines are okay with it (so far anyway lol). We're not too strict around here, so never be afraid to ask questions

Re: Where do I post for help with Basic Learning How to Quilt, What tools needed?

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask....in Arizona you may want to try just using flannel for the batting...just wash it first as it shrinks more than cotton....low loft batting works as well...when I lived in AZ I used Warm n Natural batting but you can also use a blended batting of poly and cotton combined...it will usually say 80/20 or something to that effect or you can use low loft poly batting...I just prefer cotton as it breathes and is a natural fiber....thread can be what ever your machine likes...I use Superior So Fine but as posted by Dee it really is what your machine likes.....for backing I prefer white or natural muslin but that is a personal choice...you can use regular cotton yardage and piece your back or purchase backing fabric...muslin comes in a variety of lengths...I usually buy the 118 in or 120 in. but it is pricey....I get mine at JoAnne's with a coupon but if making lap quilts you can get two backings out of the same cut because it is so wide....am I making sense...and welcome to the forum....I am one of the night owls here! If you have any other questions you can ask here or PM me and I will try to help you!

Thank you both so much! I definately will look for low loft then, and good to know I don't need to get more cones of thread (Hubby will thank you on that!). I'm a night owl also -- 2:30 am here hahaha

Had so much fun watching all the you-tube video's - had no idea all the quilts you can make with a Jelly Roll - Bookmarked a couple.

It looks like a ruler (clear) is needed to begin --Suggestions? What size is a good starting point?

I am SO excited to begin in 3-5 days when my first Jelly Roll gets here, ahh you all could tell? :-)

Hello - looks like you are getting some good feedback already and I have to agree about location making a difference in batting and threads DO differ from machine to machine.

If you are really new to sewing/quilting, I would suggest small projects to start - like hot pads, place mats, to practice with your machine and the settings, threads, bobbin.

Good luck and expect more response.

Your first ruler should be a 6" x 24" so you can cut yardage....then a smaller ruler in length...there are many out there....I usually buy a package deal (again with a coupon) where you can get several different sizes of square rulers in one package....also make sure you have a rotary cutter and mat as well.....the self healing mats are the best!

6x24 is a must even if you don't quilt. I use mine for folding up fabric. lol

I just found this by accident it just popped up on me. Might be helpful.

From fabric selection to piecing, our Beginning Quilting Series will guide you through the process step-by-step.

Also if you go to Etsy and type in quilts it will lead you to lots of blogs with lot's of info. I find lot's of cool stuff there.

                  Hi and welcome.

Sometimes I use the 108" and sometimes 44" - according to what I want for the backing.

I generally use cotton thread from Connecting Threads. It's 100% cotton, 50 wt. and 1,200 yds per spool. http://www.connectingthreads.com/thr...__L600902.html

My wife and my mom always used 44" for the backing and just pieced it. Easy peasy! So that is what I do too! Never tried 108" probably never will because I am a creature of habit. I started with the mat, ruler and rotery cutter combo from Jo-Ann's with a coupon it is inexpensive! After that wack away!

Must haves are cutting mat, rotary cutter, and the 6 x 24" ruler to start with. I agree with Blondie. Start with small projects first so as not to get overwhelmed, and it is a very good way to practice everything from piecing to sandwiching and binding. Any questions you have will get answered . We just had, on another thread, a complete instruction lesson on making a purse. 26 pages total, so ask away. There will always be someone on here with the answer. From the smallest question, to the most difficult. There are no quilt police here. Enjoy your endeavor into the wonderful world of quiltin.

Thank you all! Got coupon in hand and off for the rulers. DARN that Daily Deal (and me staying UP late to see what it is lol) So I've got 2 jelly rolls coming, 2 Charm packs and umm yes at least 1 Turnover -- What a start huh! Since i've NO clue how these can be combo'd... I best start watching all the you-tubes... but they are so interesting they don't help you fall alseep!

could not find the tutorial on the new Turnovers -- Will peek around a bit more -- Practicing my 1/4" sewing, actually I use this in Home Dec (Pillows) and today with 2 machines, figured out where to watch to get a decent one.

One thing I see no one has suggested yet:

                            Patience!!
Seriously, you have to take your time and think of every seam as a learning experience. Try to make every seam have a consistent seam allowance, try to "press" every block and not "iron" it because you're in a hurry... you'll be thankful you did when your blocks come out square at the end! You didn't learn to write overnight, you practiced your A's repeatedly until you can do it in your sleep, right? Same thing applies! I know it's always exciting to begin a new project, but I myself have a stack of 20 piece blocks that have to be entirely ripped out because I was in a hurry and my bias edges all stretched! Take your time and enjoy the process!
