WIP - 1/18/17 - Quilting is a Way of Life

Quilting is a way of life. I saw this written on a fellow quilter's FaceBook page. It resonated with me. From my start as a quilter, a little over six years ago, to today, quilting has become, if not a way of life, an important part of my life. It started with my looking for a 'hobby', and my sister's interest in making some jelly roll tote bags. (Of course, we didn't even know what a jelly roll was at the time.) We took a beginners' quilting class, and we were both hooked ... most quilters will be able to finish the rest of the story!

And, I came full circle to attempting garment sewing again. (I last did garment sewing almost 50 years ago!) But, perhaps, calling making pajama pants 'garment sewing' is a bit of a stretch! LOL! I was able to finish Izzy's PJ pants and deliver them to her this past Saturday. She loved them, but unfortunately, even though the measurements were correct, the pants were a bit small. The next morning, there was a split in them! So, I took them back home with me, and I am going to try to add a gusset to correct the problem. My mother always said to buy pajamas a size larger for the comfort factor - perhaps that applies to sewing them as well?

While visiting, Izzy completed the rest of the first part of the Double Slice quilt. She chain pieced 25 blocks, and we then had fun seeing how the 25 blocks stretched from the living room through the dining room!

Now, for me, I see doing some repairs this week, and then, well, I haven't chosen what I will work on next. What about you?

Sounds like Izzy was really productive! Sorry about the pj's. I bought a pj pattern, but still haven't tried them.

Haven't done much sewing so far this week. Had a couple of friends over for lunch and to sew on Monday, since I was off work. Had to clean the sewing room (and house) before they came over. We had fun together. Since the room is cleaned up, I haven't gotten back in there and pulled a project out. Not sure what I am going to work on next - procrastinating on getting a couple of tops quilted.

Not sure how I want to quilt them - they are both pretty busy patterns. I posted pics of them on a thread earlier this week. If you have any ideas on how to quilt them, I am happy to hear them!

DH has a routine colonoscopy tomorrow, so once we are back from that, I am planning on getting some sewing done!

Sounds like Izzy is having fun making her quilt. I suspect in a few years, we'll have a new forum member.

Still working on my flannel log cabin quilt. Was hopeing to have all the quilting done over the weekend, but it has turned out to be more time consuming than I thought. I did get all the inner blocks (24 of them) quilted, and about half of the inner border. Still have to figure out what design to put on the 6 inch outer border.

Work is picking up (tax season) and I'm going to be putting in more hours at the office for the next three months, so that means fewer hours in the sewing room, or with family, or cleaning, or cooking....you get the picture. I'm already getting grumpy and tired, and we're only two weeks into tax season.

I hope to be able to sew when my new glasses arrive. The vertigo seems to be over but the eye strain is tiring. My eye doctor said I have nearsighted eyes but farsighted eye muscles, so they don't cooperate right. Also I was just trying to do basic tacking on a thick comforter and stabbed my bobbin case. My husband helped me by pulling out the needle and I sanded off the rough spot where it was. The machine seems to sew right on test fabric but I am leery of stuffing that thick comforter under again. The thickness is why I tied the quilt initially. Maybe I will go back to that. It's nice to hear about everyone else's projects.

Quilting has taken over my life and I love every minute of it. Yesterday I put a quilt in the frame and started hand quilting.

I agree, Quilting has become a way of life. Spend more time behind my sewing machine then anywhere else. If I miss a day I go into withdrawal...I think it is therapy. When I am creating something with fabric I am a happier person.

I've only been quilting for a few years but yep - it's pretty much taken over all my free time. if I'm not actively sewing, then I'm planning quilts in my head.

I goofed up my Dr appts yesterday - double booked myself. Got it straightened out, but I had already taken the day off so I picked up my new glasses and finished a table runner for my mom I'm still getting used to these glasses - I have bifocals now & there seems to be a bit of a learning curve with these things, lol. it certainly was easier to thread the needle & to see stiched when I needed to rip a mistake out though.

I am trying to channel my inner Angela Walters on this quilt. I just love her style. She said something like you don't have to figure out how you are going to quilt the whole quilt to get started. Just do the part you have figured out. So I started with the continuous wishbone squared spiral. That part went great. After the wishbone was quilted then it was obvious that I needed to fill in the gaps in between the squared spiral with squares filled with straight lines. Then I got stuck and stared at the quilt for three days waiting for inspiration to strike and tell me how to fill in the colored fabric part of the quilt. Finally like a bolt out of the blue the answer came. Nested diamonds.

When I first started quilting (1993) they didn't have cutting mats/ rotary cutters (or if they did I was not aware). I would get so frustrated cutting with scissors and templates. So when I received a cash bonus from work and spent it on something I wanted; a rotary mat, cutter & ruler Happy times but couldn't always quilt because of raising a family. I was making my to do list and now that the kids have graduated, I have most evenings to myself. Enjoying quilting

Hi, just a quick check in. I've been crazy busy with family, but everything is getting back to normal. I've been working on Bonnie Hunters mystery. My goal for this weekend is to quilt two baby quilts for twin boys. I'm behind the boys are 6months already. Have another friend who is expecting twins ( boy/girl) any day now. Hopefully I can pick out a pattern and get the fabrics picked out.

I got my tacking/tying repairs done on my chair back cushion so I can use it again. My new glasses still haven't arrived so I am waiting for them. The new bobbin case is working fine. I suppose I could organize my sewing room but I actually like it looking like a volcano exploded. It's not boring. lol I bought the beads for another cross stitching sampler and they were ridiculously expensive, but I couldn't find comparable ones cheaply on any other sites. I might do some slow freehand embroidery for practice with crazy quilt stitches.

Each night when I get home from the restaurant I have been FMQing a DP9 105x100 inch quilt. I'm half done. Nothing as ambitious as Denise's but it will get done I sold the 9 patch swap today and was pretty excited about that and I found someone to help me with the Shriners Project. So , a good week all in all
