    WIP - 12/21/16 - Pulling threads!

Hello all! Hope you are all doing well and getting ready for whatever holiday you will be celebrating. Today is the Winter Solstice - the darkest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, and the 'beginning of the light' as the days will begin to get longer. And, the opposite in the southern hemisphere - today is the longest day of the year.

And I am literally 'pulling threads' as I am making the fringe on flannel scarves. Boy, does this take a long time - and a bit boring too. I have to make sure I have something interesting to watch on TV.

Other than that, I am busy cooking for Christmas Eve. My extended family (which is small) meets at my sister's for Christmas Eve. We don't do a traditional meal. This year I will be bringing a pasta dish with a sauce made of Italian sausage and tomatoes, a seven layer salad, the obligatory spinach dip, 'bacon, bourbon, bbq'd meatballs', and onion thyme jam which is spread over goat cheese on either bread or crackers. The onion thyme jam was made yesterday, today I made the pasta sauce, and tomorrow I will make the meatballs. The salad and spinach dip will be made on Friday. And, in between it all, I'll be pulling more threads to make more fringe!

What is everyone else doing this week?

I finished DD's throw just need to sort the threads, will do the in front of the TV. Started to sandwich my DGS's quilt - I had forgotten one side needed a border and it just had to be the looonnng side. For some reason it ended up 1" short so had to be some crafty sewing and trimming of the top borders but it looks OK.
I was going to back it with a sheet after lovingly washing and ironing it I found it was too small!!! E
Had to use some fabric I had put aside for my own quilt but that's OK cos I haven't started mine yet. Then found the batting was 1" short - yes had to use mine again!!! My saving grace is that when I bought the sheet and batting I was sick at the time - don't usually make such silly mistakes.
Anyway have managed to start the quilting (only SITD) so hopeful it will be finished tomorrow night.
Apart from the sewing the only thing left for me to do is post some cards and shop for fresh fruit and milk etc on Friday evening.

I forgot to post my Grinch on this thread. Here it is and I love it because it makes me smile! Right now I'm taking a break from working on my nieces quilt. Doesn't it look like Christmas exploded?!

I'm taking a break til next year. Once the New Year is over, I can reclaim my sewing space. When I put my sewing space in order, I didn't think I would miss sewing for this short period of time, but guess what.. I have a "test" block all cut and laid out to piece. Granny Squares... That's the first thing I'll be doing NEXT YEAR..

This mind of mine just doesn't give up and rest either... making a list ("checking" it twice) of all the things to do next year.

I'm doing the same thing as Granny Judy. We will be traveling for Olive's oncology evaluation next week and until that's done I couldn't possibly concentrate on anything else right now.

Wishing everyone good luck tying up all the last minute gifts and preparations.

Good morning.........now back to my nieces quilt. I feel like I'm making progress now but I'm glad we aren't getting together with them until a few days after Christmas!

I'm working at my part-time job through today. I'll start preparing food for Christmas Eve tomorrow. DS will be arriving Christmas Eve. We'll have our Christmas then. Christmas morning will be relaxed at home then we'll spend the afternoon with extended family.

@pcbatiks - I love your Grinch quilt! So bright & festive!

I'm trying to clean up the office/craft room - it's a total disaster, LOL, but I keep finding "just one more thing" I want to make so it's slow going.

My teenager is out with friends after school today & won't be home till late so I'm trying to get everything tidied up a bit, make sure I have all the stocking things sorted so there isn't a last minute panic and get ready for an all day bake-a-thon tomorrow....I'm running way behind on the Xmas goodies this year!

I am quilting the Tula Pink version of the Tier Soup pattern. I have always admired how Tula merges or hides the animal motifs in the fabric. I wanted to try and hide an animal motif in the quilting, so I managed to merge one elephant motif with my wishbone quilting motif.

It's a quiet week here, but the temperatures are above freezing, so thankfully no snow or ice to slip on. I continue to work on the Village applique quilt. The "datura" looking tree block is all ironed on and half the flowers are zig zagged around. I found a setting on the machine that I like better for the look of the stitching. I think it is 0.5 length and 1.5 width. I'm using invisible thread so it wasn't terribly visible anyway. It's a fine line between shredding the cut edge applique and sewing it unobtrusively.

I Mistyfused more fabric for the next tree and have been cutting that out. It also has skinny dark stems. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/473792823273832030/

I had a lot of fun giant zig zagging around the ten inch background fabric squares to stop their fraying. I rarely have cause to use the fastest speed on my machine It all gets cut down to 8 1/2 inch squares so I guess the directions say to cut them too big for easier handling and fray reduction while appliqueing.

                        Happy holidays!

Doing the happy dance because I finally got my hands on the Hoffman Crystal Blue kit. It has 200 precut batik pieces with notches to line everything up. It was my first purchase from this quilt shop and they wrapped it beautifully with a hand signed card. Happy dance, happy dance.

I am busy quilting my bordered periwinkle quilt from Jennys tutorial. I am putting a spiral in variegated thread in the round part and sort of nested diamonds in the other part. I sewed right down the middle of the black sashing with my walking foot to stabilize everything. I am about half way through.

Oh, how nice that your kit has everything cut for you. That's going to be a gorgeous quilt.
I like your perriwinkle quilt too. The black sashing is nice with the brighter colors.
