WIP - 8/2/16 - One quilting project, like one cookie, is never enough!

Do you agree that one quilting project is never enough? I know many of us have multiple projects going at the same time. But there are others who stay on one project from start to completion. When I started quilting, I thought I would be in the 2nd camp - I found out I am not! It can be a lot of fun to make a quick and easy quilt top, like a jelly roll race quilt top. And, at times, I do something like that for some mindless - escapism - sewing. I do try to reign myself in, though, to get those tops made into completed quilts.

Today, I was planning on starting another Christmas gift project. I am going to make tissue pack holders and matching chap stick holders for the ladies in the family. The first set would be the practice set - for me. All went well with the tissue holder, and almost everything went well with the chap stick holder ... until .... I realized ..... I had the wrong sized D-rings. I needed 2" D-rings, and I had ordered 3/4" D- rings! A bit off, wouldn't you say? So now I am surfing the net to find a good source for 2" D-rings. I'll put a call out to the forum for recomendations on suppliers. What I will do is make the project up to the point where I need to incorporate the D-rings. Once I get the right size, I can finish.

The other project for this week is to finish a set of placemats for my daughter. It will be the same pattern as what I showed you last week (I Cheat at Curves), but the fabrics are black and white. I am also getting a friend to make matching napkins from a block print design. They know about the placemats, but not about the napkins.

As always - looking forward to reading about, and seeing, what everyone else is doing this week.

Until I somehow win a long arm quilting machine, or a sizeable sum of money to send my quilt tops out to be custom quilted, I will continue piecing in the warm months, and quilting the pieced tops in the cold months. So I always have multiple projects going, but not because I don't want to finish. I just can't stand having yards of quilt piled in my lap or thrown over my shoulder when it is so hot while I am quilting the three layers together.

Despite my injured shoulder and a bout with some kind of stomach bug I finished the first 8 of the 16 paper pieced spokes in my Magna Chroma quilt. I put the two scrap test spokes in the picture so you can see how beautiful this hand dyed fabric in the kit is. I have another 8 spokes to make, then time to join them together.

I am happy to say that I have gained a lot of confidence in paper piecing. I was very timid when I first started. It all seemed so backwards and awkward. Thanks to the Craftsy classes I am forging ahead.

The Magna Chroma quilt is very striking!!

There are three quilts that I'm working on this week. One is Jenny's floating hexagon. I didn't order enough fabric for it so I'm waiting for an order from M*.

#2 quilt is the Rainbow Strip and Flip http://cluckclucksew.com/2012/07/tut...aby-quilt.html. The top is done but I'm waiting on batting and my first stencil to arrive. So that will be a bit of a challenge for me.

#3 quilt is actually two quilts, both HST's but only 51 inches each. I haven't decided which layouts to use yet. I just finished sewing and cutting the HST's this morning, now I have to iron them. That's my least favorite part. Hopefully I'll finish them this week, I can't possibly start another project...can I?

Oh yes, lots of projects going. I am FMQ quilting one, cutting out another, I have one twin top made and another pieced but lacking the applique. That doesn't count all the ones waiting patiently in plastic boxes for their turn.
I don't like to do too much FMQ in one day, taking breaks helps my back enjoy it, too.

That Magna Chroma quilt is going to be gorgeous. I have that rainbow flip and strip quilt on my one day list too. Right now I am just finishing the quick half hexie quilt from Quilting is more fun than houseworks site Its so happy it was making me smile while making it. it was tempting to turn it into a twin and gift it to one of my nieces but I did not quite have enough of a couple colors.
While doing a bit of cleaning in my sewing room, I came across some 4 1/2" strips of some solids left over from a completed project.  I was...

I thought I was done after five rows but decided it needed one more row, I was short a couple of Half hexies so after cutting more to keep the pattern I have enough to use with another focus fabric to make a smaller one. This is quick and easy but since the MSQ template is so large the colors don't change as much as I would like so I have a kid floral print that I thought I would use with the tumbler block instead. Already have those colors pulled.

I also pulled out a UFO laid it out its the jellystone park pattern just a poor choice of jelly rolls that I picked and I hated it I have pulled it out and put it away for two years. I decided to just saw the squares to break it up and just git it done. Someone might like it someday lol.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

You all are doing so many wonderful beautiful projects. I used to do start to finish and then, the Shriners Raffle came along and I put a quilt top that needed quilting aside that I was working on and another that I had cut out (which I finished today) and started doing some mindless quilting and learning the FMQ technique. THen, you all started talking about zipper bags and how much fun so I ordered a couple of kits and made one and cut out 4 that are taunting me to be sewn. I ordered all the hardware to make 20 of them for gifts , zippers and d rings , and then I made some more raffle quilts and then, lo and be hold, I met this woman at Goodwill that offered to sell me some of her stash cheap, so I bought it...about 80 lbs worth...and so I had to sort it and iron it and stack it and while I was FMQing I was trying to decide on patterns and what fabrics I should use first. In the mean time, baby daughter gifted me a quilt kit from connectingthreads and I need to do that and so it goes...I'll never have enough time or energy to do all the things I plan.

Definitely have more than one project going! I think I have the attention span of a flea cause I hop from one project to the next. Ordinarily that doesn't bother me but I have some Christmas projects that must get finished before I start anything else.

Beautiful work Denise. I can't wait to see it finished.
I have multiple projects going. Usually, I like to finish the top before starting another one but today I stopped my work on an Irish chain to play with the cutting corners pattern (inspired by Suzanne's quilt in Show and Tell). This is now under my needle...

                  Hi:

I have been away from quilting for years and then I picked up my stuff 2 weeks ago and started it! I have at least 3 unfinished projects- a small quilt, a wall hanging and a table runner. All needing to be quilted and binding to be done. So for the past week, I have sat down and worked on the wall hanging. Almost done, next I want to wrap up the table runner and then the small quilt. BUT in going back into my stashes, I have many pouches that have cut up pieces or finished squares that need to be put together. It's like -WOW I did not realize how much I had started and left for many years. I am finally happy working on these again. Watching Jenny's tutorials in the background as I work. I am not a one at a time- many going on at once. Happy Place!

I usually don't have more than 2 or 3 quilting projects going at a time. When it comes to clothing I will intentionally cut and prep a handful of like items together to mass-produce them over a few days.

This week I have on deck: 2 jackets, one for each of my kids, a fun raglan tunic for myself and a pretty (i hope!) sweatshirt for myself.

Then I need to start packing because we head back to Kazakhstan in 6 days....

That time at home has really zipped on by hasn't it?

Do you use a serger to make sweat shirts?

                          Yes, it always flys by!!

Yes, I use a serger when I sew clothes with knit, which is why I've mostly been working on clothes this summer. My sweatshirt will be a light weight French terry with a bit of stretch to it. 😄

                              The Magna Chroma is beautiful!!!!
I was always one to start and finish before starting another project...I am blaming it on wanting to do so many sewing projects...I wish I could just get into my sewing room and sew, sew, sew....I seem to have lots of interruptions happen each day....but, I do get to sew everyday----so that is a bonus and thankful for it...
