What size blocks do you start out with to make a 12 in finish block. My brain is not working well today.

When you say finished block, do you mean at the stage below? If you want this at 12" it will be quite difficult. You will need a 4 2/3" block to start with which might be difficult to cut but once your squares are cut it will be just as easy as any other block.Attached Files

You could get around the awkward cutting if you used 1/2" seams when you sew your 9-patch blocks together.
If you used 5" blocks, sewn together into 9-patch with a half inch seam but then used quarter inch seams for the rest of the sewing you would end up with a 12" finished block.
