Disappearing nine patch

What size blocks do you start out with to make a 12 in finish block. My brain is not working well today.

I'm just guessing and could be wrong but wouldn't it be 3 sets of 3 4 inch blocks sewn together. I'm just new to quilting so I might be wrong.

4 1/2" to allow for seam allowance.

I tried 4 1/2 and it didn't come out right. I think it is 5 in but not sure. this is before you sub cut it in to fours and switch it around. I'm confusing myself

4 1/2" is correct. You end up with a 12 1/2" block and the extra 1/2" is your seam allowance to attach the completed blocks.

sounds like we have two issues being discussed. The original question was about making a disappearing 9 patch, and the 4.5 inch squares are for a regular nine patch.

yes I want to do the disappearing nine patch for a 12 in finish block, so how do I do it.

When you say finished block, do you mean at the stage below? If you want this at 12" it will be quite difficult. You will need a 4 2/3" block to start with which might be difficult to cut but once your squares are cut it will be just as easy as any other block.

That is what I wanted but didn't realize that I would have weird cutting of squares thank you for all your help in figuring this out.

You could get around the awkward cutting if you used 1/2" seams when you sew your 9-patch blocks together.

If you used 5" blocks, sewn together into 9-patch with a half inch seam but then used quarter inch seams for the rest of the sewing you would end up with a 12" finished block.

Ha ha ha I'm just glad to be getting some math practice before I go back to uni in Septmeber. Bring on the maths!
