Help please. machine binding on front wrinkles

I need help machine binding.
I’ve tried again today doing a zig zag in top of baby quilt.
Fabric just puckers and doesn’t look that great.
Need tips on how to stitch on top of quilt.
I can hand quilt fine on the back.
Thread is fine.

A walking foot is your best bet. You are sewing through 6 layers of fabric AND batting. Not to mention any seams that are in the mix. That is a lot of thickness! The only way I have been successful with that method is a walking foot.

I do binding with the back frequently, particularly on items that will be laundered a lot. Start your sewing roughly in the middle of one of the sides that has less give or stretch in the back fabric. Maybe even try a little glue basting or adjusting your pressure foot pressure. I don't use a walking foot, although I have one.

I always use the walking foot. I sew the binding to the front side first, turn it over & use a seam gauge to turn over the binding the same width all the way around. I use quilting pins, not clips. I press both front & back before starting to stitch. I sew SITD on the front, & it catches the edge of the binding on the back. I sew a straight stitch; I use a 3.0 stitch length. Also make sure you use a 90-14 quilting needle to go through all those layers.

Hi, when I see the bindings on the front I use a serpentine stitch. It seams to work best for me to catch everything. I mainly only sew on bindings on baby quilts due to the amount of use. Hope that helps!

Are you using bias binding or is it straight across the width of fabric? Bias is much more likely to pucker/wrinkle. A walking foot should help as others have mentioned.

too small of a stitch can cause puckering a bit too. make a sample and change to a longer stitch and see how that does.

Are you using purchased single fold, double fold binding? Or did you make it yourself? Sometimes I think binding that is folded in half and stitched to the quilt, and then folded over again to finish by hand adds less stretch and comes out better than purchased binding.

I use one of these feet with homemade 2" 1/4 inch binding ironed and folded so would go through this , it takes some effort, plus need to release the foot slide down the fabric, to sort the corners then slide back up ensuring the mitre created is not jiggled and sew again, fiddly, irritating, but when set up right, does sew both sides at same time without having to repair the parts missed. That happened with the other method.
Binding is my gremlin.

Nancy- Since you mention both zig-zag and handstitching to the back, I wonder what the zig-zag is for. Is the zig-zag a top stitch on the front seam after the binding is attached on both sides? If so, a zig-zao stitch on a quilt sandwich can cause some problem. It has a tendency to gather the material between the sticthes due to the thickness. Each stitch is pulling in the opposite direction from the next, or last stitch. The fabric gets confused, and the wrinkles are really "shrugs."

I will get a different walking foot. Needle hits the one I have, so guess it’s the wrong one.
I sew binding out of fabric like MSQ says.
Really want to learn to bind on top front of quilt.
What is best binding for a little loft on baby quilt? Right now I
Use a 100 percent cotton batting.

Oops sorry, just meant I can hand sew fine on the back on back of quilt to finish.
Not doing two final stitches.
Just would like to be able to do a decorative stitch on top.
