    Irish Chain with hearts

I want to piece a SIngle Irish chain with pieced hearts in the "open" area. Anyone have a pattern for this or any ideas? I thought of making my go to hearts with borders to square it up and then figuirng the sizes for the nine patches.

I would probably make the quilt as usual then applique the hearts. You could either do raw edge for a country chic look or finished edges for a cleaner look. If the later, I use two layers of material, turn and cut out the middle of the underside so it's not to thick. Or you could stuff them for a cute poufy look. Used dryer sheets work well for backing appliques.

I have made a lot of Irish chain quilts with embroidery in the center. The center blocks are 6-1/2” unfinished squares if you use 2-1/2” squares for your chain. Jenny has several heart pieced quilt patterns you could look at. You could adjust your heart piecing to make it come out to 6-1/2” square.

I like the idea of applique hearts. Maybe add some lace around the heart.
