  • Can poly/cotton blend broadcloth be used for quilting?

I have a bit of broadcloth that is a poly/cotton blend in my stash from other projects and wondered if it can be used for quilting. I would probably piece it with cotton from my stash. Are there reasons I would NOT want to do that?

If you don’t mind the cotton/poly feel and look, sure, go ahead and use it. Some ploy/cotton broadcloth is very thin and ravels easily. Take these points into consideration when choosing colors and size of pieces within the blocks.

Also remember not to set your iron on high when using a poly/cotton blend. It can melt the poly.

Sometimes the poly cotton tends to pill as well.

You need to think about shrinkage, the poly blend won't shrink, the cotton will, so I'd preshrink the cotton, plus after washing, the poly will stay smooth, the cotton will show the aged look. I wouldn't mix them.

I tried using it for backing when I first started quilting. Was not happy with it, but there are probably different qualities, i'm sure. The one I had was too thin. Ripped out all of the quilting to start over. Good thing it was only lap size.
