I usu do 2.25 because that's what I was taught before precuts. : ) I also like pieced bindings and do them fairly often. As a couple others said, you can put short sections of a coordinating fabric from the quilt between your other strips so it looks planned.

You need (45"x2)+(51"x2)=192"+12"=202". The question is: How many strips? 202"/40"=5.05 strips. Can you get 5 strips from the fabric you have? If you cut the strips 2.5", you will need 12.5" of fabric. 2.25" strips will require 11.25" of fabric. This is selvage to selvage, with the selvage trimmed.
      I hope this helps.
Just love everyone. I'll sort them out later. -God

You will need 5 strips - 2.5" by WOF (at east 42")

For future calculate it as follows -
        1. 2(length + breadth). Add 16"
        2. Divide the above by 42"

I would cut 6 strips. Having cut them 2.25, you will get a tight 1/4" binding. I tend to cut my bindings at 2.25" unless the backing is a Shannon Cuddle or I have very thick batting.

I have ran out of fabric for my binding. You can always piece it with to colors and then single fold over the piece that you don't want to show. There is a designer (is it Elizabeth Hartman?) that purposely uses a scrap piece in her binding. You can always do that too. Your quilt, so do as you wish!
Blogging ahead.....research in quilting and sewing with a dab of cooking/recipes too.

I agree with some of the others, why not make them 2.25 or 2 inches instead of 2.5. I've used 2.25 before and it was a problem at all. I actually prefer it sometimes.
