What thread do you prefer for EPP?

What thread do you like for EPP? I have Aurifil that I use on my machine but at the moment trying to sew some epp hexies together with a spool of Gutermann that I had stashed away but it seems to knot and fray easily. Thoughts?

I use Aurifil thread 50 wt, but what helps the thread from not fraying or knotting is Conditioning thread wax.

I use a ball of beeswax to condition thread anytime that I hand sew. I have had the same ball of wax for 20 years now. Does that mean that I have minded my own beeswax?

Perhaps. My first thought was that you must have had a large ball of wax to make it last for 20 years!

I learned the hard way too. Get polyester thread for EPP. You will see you can get very fine thread that is nearly invisible. Also stronger and doesn’t fray and shred like cotton. Polyester thread is strong enough to take it when the needle pulls the thread past the edge of the papers stitch after stitch. Plus for multicolor prints light and darker grays will be your go to colors. Right now I am using Superior Bottom Line 60 wt poly which you can get on prewound bobbins in an assortment to get you started for a far more thrifty option than spools. They are called SuperBobs. I’m using these up in my most used colors and after trying a sample of Wonderfil Invisifil thread I will be switching to that line soon. They also have an assortment on prewound bobbins and theirs are called DecoBobs. This thread is 80 weight and really melts into the fabric beautifully. I know we usually use cottons for piecing, but trust me, with these fine threads you will be so happy with your results. Also, use the finest needles. Makes a big difference.

I use glue for basting. For sewing my pieces together I use Aurifil 80wt thread.

I love the conditioning thread wax, bought near the register at JoAnns.

I only use Aurifil cotton thread. In a light cream color. Perfect for me it doesn't tangle at all!

If you like Thread Heaven, stock up now. The company is closing.

My favorite thread for EPP and applique is Bottom Line. It's a 60 wt polyester thread, strong and fine. I recently bought a cone of Microquilter, which is 100 wt, and that stuff also works beautifully for EPP and applique. Both threads just sink beautifully into the fabric.

My other recommendation is to NOT whip-stitch your EPP. Use the ladder stitch instead. Your stitches will not show.
