I trim after I press them open. You really can use any ruler with a 45 degree line on it.

I just watched a video about the BlocLoc Ruler Set for HSTs and Flying Geese. Wow, what a slick tool and I'm thinking of getting some of them. A bit costly, but they sure work great!

I love my BlocLoc, but it can be done on any ruler. I press them open and make sure the diagonal on the ruler lines up with the diagonal of the HST. Then make sure the middle of the square is lined up with the ruler.

I always trim my HSTs after I've pressed them open. That way you trim off the dog ears, too. I use my Creative Grids 6.5" square ruler for most of my squaring up. Pay attention to that diagonal marking on the ruler; it should be right at the corners of the block.

It's much easier to trim them up before you press them open. You line up the line on the seam and cut 2 sides.

Squaring up half square triangles can be a bit tricky.

Boy don't I know it. I had worked forever on a hunters star and when it said trip 1/4 inch off the little hst's I did but not necessarily the same 1/4 for each of the sides. So, it went together but nothing really matched up. That was my first realization that it mattered where you took the excess off. They were square but not HST square. Quilt is usable and I finished it but with much dismay. Now, I would ask you guys and all the good advice is really paying off

I think you'll need to trim your HSTs down to 4.5" - I can't think of any other way to make that work.

Any ideas on how I do that?

I am making a Jacobs ladder quilt, I have finished the squares but to assemble the blocks I noticed that the 4 square blocks are 4.5 inches, and the 1/2 square triangles are 5". How do I proceed?
