Need your suggestions - this is the original pattern

... but I want to change it to a single column about a third of the way across a double quilt and something like this -

grey and stripes.pdf

It's for a young man so don't want it to be 'girly'. I was thinking brightly coloured strips on a grey background and should I have a single block of grey to the right or divide it up to match the strip column. As you can gather I had difficulty explaining this so hope you can understand my question!! Thanks

Maybe one solid panel to the left (1 1/2 times the width of the pieced panel) and then another single panel to the right (half the width as the pieced panel). If my math is close, the quilt will be approx 60" wide.

You could use the same color for the background for the two side panels, or even use a darker shade (my preference) or different color all together.

I like Caroline's idea, but I would test the two color backgrounds before buying a bunch of fabric.

Your welcome! I actually think sewUK's idea to do one panel to the side would make a cute baby quilt. I have so many jelly rolls!

Yes, in the right colors, it would have a very modern look to it. I have JR that I bought when I first got into quilting and I need to find something to do with them. I don't really care for the JR race.

Thanks so much for your help and for the link Lorie - just shows when someone else takes a look it's not so much of a problem anymore
