Big mistake

I've made a big mistake and not sure I can fix it

Yesterday I was ironing binding for a quilt and needed to put more water in my iron. I just use regular tap water and never have problems. Well, my daughter had brought up what I thought was a glass of water, there was just a little bit left and being the lazy person I am, figured I would use that instead of walking all the way to the bathroom get get a fresh glass of water.

When the iron got hot, it started smelling funny. I mentioned it and said something about using that water. It wasn't water in the glass, it was Coke! I've drained the iron, rinsed it out several times, ran a whole reservoir of water through on the hottest setting and it's still spewing brown coke. When I put what I thought was the water, it looked clear, I couldn't even tell it was coke.

Any chance I can salvage this iron? Any ideas? Thanks.

Vinegar may work. I would do it several times, steaming it on a towel. I don't think your iron is ruined but it may take a few cycles to clean it out.

I have seen some stuff at stores for cleaning irons and coffee pots. I'll google and see if I can remember what it was.

I would try vinegar, and it may take several rounds - good luck!

Heat the iron up and unplug it. Pour the tank full of white vinegar, keeping your face well out of the way. The fumes will be strong. Leave it to cool, then set the soleplate on a folded towel, leave overnight. Then heat it up a bit, shake well and empty. Fill with fresh water and set it to steam, working til its clear. I raised 2 onery boys, so yeah.

OK, my first thought was "Coke? Is your water brown?"

White vinegar is a miracle worker.

I hope you can salvage your iron. One of the gals at my retreat got her bottles mixed up and mistakenly put the vodka for our after dinner drinks in the iron while she was setting up.

What a waste of good vodka. LOL Although I've heard of alcohol being used in a mix with water or something in substitute for "Best Press" Wishing you luck with your iron.

one place I googled said mixing baking soda with the vinegar. I don't know. I would use the plaine vinegar and just keep rinsing

I would try vinegar, as many times as necessary. It will clean gunk out of a coffeemaker so I would think it could handle coke.

I use vodka, about 1 oz to 10 oz of water, to release the wrinkles in my fabric. I mix it in a spray bottle and not the iron reservoir though.
