    A returning member > > with a Quilting Question

I've posted a couple of times recently . . but mostly just hanging out and reading the posts to see if I could find an answer to my question . . . all very interesting stuff but just not my particular issue - - I've finished the top and back of a t-shirt quilt for my DGD > > > also have the batting I'll use . . .

BUT since I've only done QAYG quilts, I'm not sure how to continue the process of 'making the sandwich' and 'quilting' for a pretty large quilt. Any step-by-step advice for me?

I have to use my floor to use this method.

Mark the middles first- **side to side & top to bottom**. Spread out the backing fabric wrong side up. I use painters tape to tape the back down..tape the middles first. side to side - top to bottom . Then tape down the corners while making sure the back is smooth and without wrinkles. ** ( I've ironed the backing b4 doing this process- using steam or spray starch on those stubborn "folds")

I do the same process with my backing.. careful not to pull or stretch out the fibers.. (some peeps use that spray basting stuff) I don't..** I have wet a towel and put the batting with wet towel into the dryer to relax those folds and squished areas before this step if my batting is not laying flat and even.

Mark your tops middles. top to bottom- side to side and using the tape as a guide, match up the top to the back & tape the top down (making a sandwich). Making sure the top is right side up /facing you. **don't ask why I added that last sentence. **

I then smooth and pin starting in the middle and working my way out (**.. lots of pins.. about a hands width apart..) Again some peeps use the spray basting stuff..

Hope this helps you get stated... I'm sure others have better ways of doing their sandwiches.. this is just MY Way>

My method is similar to Judy's.
I have wall to wall carpet, so I use a set of "junk" pins to stick the fabric to the carpet. Kind of like mini tent stakes. I do use the basting spray. I spray fairly lightly and I do back it up with safety pins as I have a sewing machine with a small harp. Repeated pulling and tugging can loosen the adhesive and allow for shifting.
It must look like fat old lady yoga while I am crawling around on the floor pinning stuff!

          Thanks Granny Judy and Mary D . . .

Granny Judy, I admire that you're able to get down to work on a quilt on the floor. Because of some recent knee problems, I'm afraid that's not an option for me. I did buy the spray basting stuff . . and planned either to use my bed or our pool table with the table tennis board on top to put the sandwich parts together.

MaryD, thanks for the link - spent quite awhile watching interesting vids on how to do the job while sitting . . . a few more I still want to watch . . . before I decide how I'll do it.

I'll post when I decide . . . so, thanks again for your help.

Thanks Toggpine - I envy you and Judy . . . crawling around in the floor . . I'm gonna have to stick with standing or sitting to get the job done. Didn't realize I'd need pins if I used the spray baste . . must order pins I guess.

All that I've learned brings up a new question for me > > > the back of this quilt is a 'patchwork' of it's own . . made from shirts from my Mr and SIL (Sarah's poppy and dad), along with some more t-shirt fabric. I've been very careful with measurements and placement of the pieces since I left a couple pockets on the shirts so she could use them. This will definitely complicate the quilting but she wants simple lines and only what is absolutely necessary. I'm open to any ideas about how this might be done.

            Thanks again . . .

I rarely use pins with spray basting. But if your quilt is large you might want a few on the edges. Glad to know you are lurking out there!

Hey Bev - good to see your post . . . and advice. Hope things are improving with you and yours > > > and you're looking forward to the Holidays! As usual, I'm working on a couple of bags for Christmas gifts, along with the 'memory quilt' for my DGD. Getting back to quilting reminds me that 'quilting can be fun' especially when I can get the 'Grands' interested! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

It's definitely an art form.... I adopted this method from watching my littles learning to crawl... scootch around on your bottom. Tuck one leg under and bend the other leg to the side ... with your hands and arms, Scoot yourself forward or backward... works best going back wards because you can use the leg that is under (your buttocks) to move around the floor.

Sure sounds a lot like Yoga to me . . . . . I could almost picture myself getting down onto the floor . . from a chair . . to my little step stool . . to the floor. Could maybe even maneuver around per: Judy's technique . . . . my only concern is . . . how in Heaven's name do you get up off the floor?
