    HST formula

I don't know if this has been asked/answered in the past (please direct me to the answer if already posted in the past), but am wondering with Jenny's tutorial on making HSTs (by sewing all 4 edges and then cut diagonally to make 4 HSTs, is there a "formula" for what sizes to cut squares to make a certain size of HST? For example, I need a 3.5" HST, what size is the square I should be cutting from fabrics, etc.?

    Thanks in advance.

    H - is it HELPFUL?
    I - is it INSPIRING?
    N - is it NECESSARY?
    K - is it KIND?
