    Attic Window Question

We made sampler blocks in my quilt club. Each block is 12 inches. Instead of regular sashing, I wanted to do a sort of attic window sashing. I already bought a light and dark fabric and I have black to add a thin sashing. I want it to look similar to the picture below.

My question is,,,, what size should the width of the sashing strips be?

    Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't want them wider than an inch myself. Maybe cut strips 1.25 to finish at .75?
Want to add, when I did my son's attic window quilt I cut strips 2.5 to frame the window but did not add additional sashing.
