Batting, which side up?

I know there is a recommended up side and a down side with cotton batting, but for the life of me I can't seem to remember...nubs up or nubs down?

You'd think they would put that on the packaging.

(Please somebody who knows better than I do, correct me!) As I recall, the nubs should go up (i.e. next to the quilt top), because the scrim is needle-punched from the top, and creates the nubs.

That said, I don't think it matters a whole lot.

I always forget I am supposed to check this so never do. Usually it occurs to me after my entire quilt is basted and I don't have the energy to undo it. So to me it doesn't matter but I am interested in what others have to say. Good question!

We had a thread on this last winter as I recall and the concensus was that it wasn't terribly important but that if the scrim was up it was easier for the needle to go thru. At least that's what I remember.

I think it is more important if you will be hand quilting. With the scrim up, it makes it easier for the needle to go through. If machine quilting, I can't see that it really makes much difference.

I'm always forgetting. But, I'm wondering, if you are having trouble with thread shredding or skipped stitches could it be the batting is upside down?

No. That would be caused by something with the machine or thread. Sounds like you need to clean your machine. Take off the throat plate and clean all under the bobbin case. Change your needle also. Could have a burr.
