    Free motion with tracing paper.

Hope I can ask this clearly. I am best free motion quilting with tracing paper, but when you stitch the design and use the holes as a guide I have trouble. If I trace on the paper with a fixon pen or something similar it is a slow process. If I printed the design on my computer using tracing paper, do you know if that ink would migrate to the fabric? I would like to try, but checking to see if anyone has done this with success.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I trace the design on Press and Seal, then either stitch around it, or stitch through it...depending on what I am doing. Each design can be moved and re-used several times. I hand trace each design with a fine line Sharpie. The Press and Seal sticks to the fabric, so no shifting or pinning. It works for me for intricate designs......or to make repeat designs exactly the same.

Thanks for your idea, but what I really wanted to know was if the ink from the computer would "bleed" or migrate onto my fabric with the needle. But do you mean press and seal like food wrap, how can you use that more than once?

I have printed designs to be quilted over on my inkjet printer without a problem.

Yes.....I mean the food wrap. It sticks over and over. I just finished a baby quilt and I was able to use each design 5-6 times. It just sticks on the fabric. I use a Sharpie, but never had any bleed with it.

Thanks that is exactly what I needed to know. I have 16 placemats to finish and this is how I prefer to free motion,

This is something I will have to try. Just so i have it right, you draw the design, and stitch through it, how then do you re-usse it. Or do you just stitch around it.

Sometimes I stitch around it.....as in a shape.......totally reuseable. Sometimes I stitch through it to add inside details.....mostly reuseable......depends on design and number of details. As you stitch through the paper it perforated and you can easily pull off the pieces after your sewing is done. Most of the time the pieces can be reused....place carefully and stitch on same sewing lines. Occasionally, the pieces have too many details and it is a one time use. It totally depends on the design, size, number of detail lines, etc. I have a design book that I copy my designs out of and they are varied by size and details. Sorry if I am not being clear enough, but it really does depend on each detail and design. This works both on my domestic and my LA.

If you are using an inkjet printer, there is a chance printer ink will transfer if design has gotten wet. Accidents happen.

A laser printer uses toner which is fused to the paper. It can get wet with no problems.

My husband printed out a note for dog owners who let their dog do what it pleases and don't clean up after it in our driveway.
I don't know how he fastened it down, but it lasted until the paper got nasty. Rain and whatever else got dished out by the weather didn't make the print run.

I've done it with Gold Paper. Think I used a Sharpie to trace.
