Applique

I found a really cute wall quilt pattern. It has 12 baskets, one for each month. My question is when you applique the baskets etc. is the background fabric quilted before you put the applique on? Or do you quilt around the applique? Or do you go and stitch on top of it? The picture shows the back ground quilted like a grid but the applique is flat, no quilting on it. Make sense? I am writing this from work and making a mad dash home! I can try to link a picture so you can see what I am taking about.

Usually each block is appliqued individually and then the blocks are pieced together afterwards. The exception would be an appliques design that extends over more than one block.

After all blocks are pieced together and the whole quilt is layered, quilting begins. Many quilters quilt 1/4" around their applique making it "pop out" of the quilt. Then grided quilting would then be added into the background to finish the quilt. Another exception would be blocks that are quilted as you go. There's alway an exception depending on the individual piecemaker's style.

you quilt after you do the applique. those bunny hill BOM patterns are always so cute..they do a new one each year...
