Pillowcase people - stupid question of the day

I am about to buy fabric to make my Boy a couple pillowcases using Jenny's tutorial of the Tube pillowcase. Had a rough night so my brain isn't up to snuff right now, hence the stupid question about to be asked

What I would like to know is, that little 1" decorative piece...does it serve a purpose other than looking pretty? Can I leave it out without ruining the look of the pillowcase?

I leave it out all the time especially for kids ones.

I didn't like that little piece. When I washed the pillowcases it didn't lay nicely and really needed pressing. If I was to add it to another pillowcase I would sew it down along the loose folded edge so it stays in place. Leaving it off completely should be fine.

Decorative only. I have made many without it.

I never add it anymore for the same reasons as Rebecca said.

I keep my pillowcases simple. They will be washed a lot.
A row or two of top stitching so it will lay flat after
washing is all I do. Plus, remember the child will be
laying their face on it, you want a smooth surface.

Good to know. I wasn't really feeling that little bit of fabric. Thanks everyone.

I've made tons of pillowcases for kids in hospital with life threatening illness's and prefer to make the cases without the accent strip. I may add the accent strip when I make a pillowcases as a gift.

I've never done one w/that strip.

I do them both ways. Without is faster.

Pillowcases do not fit plump pillows. You have to add a strip longwise to accommodate fluffy pillow.
