Fairly recently, I switched to an 80/12 universal needle for piecing and FMQ'ing. I have had great results (especially with the FMQ'ing since I have experienced more uniform stitches and zero thread breakage since changing to this size needle). It also simplifies things to basically just have the one size needle for all my quilting needs.
I still have other needle sizes in my drawer, but this is the size I use almost all the time now.

Quilting is my passion . . . chocolate is a close second!
Mostly I use 90/14 needles, but there are also different types, not just different sizes. I usually use universal on cottons. For batiks, I use Microtex. The thread type/weight should also be considered when selecting needles. There are many articles about needles/threads on Superior Threads website.
