That looks close. I found the snowball 2 block on quilterscache and it is almost as well. I liked pretti's idea. Thank you pretti!

Forgive my nit-pickiness here. The hearts & Gizzards block forms a flower in the center with petal like shapes.
But the picture provided by Deegles shows a smooth circle in the center. I think I can figure out how to make this block...
    1. Take two 10" squares (one color, one background) and place them one on top of another, right sides up
    2. Mark 3" from all corners and trace a quarter circle arc on two opposite corners.
    3. Keep the two squares together and cut out the corner quarter circles for both squares
    4. Swap, so the color arcs are with the background square and vice-versa.
    5. Sew the two arcs to the main body of the square for both color and background square.
    4. Make HSTs with the above squares.

I'm sure I saw a Kay Woods video ( a few years ago) on how to do a Hearts & Gizzard block. Of course I can't find it now.

Maybe that is how it is done! The blocks on the original picture you posted seems to be straight seams - I think we WANT to see circles, but there are just enough sides that we "do" see them as circles. The pictures in the links posted seem to be started with curved seams.

I think you might be right about the Drunkard's Path. And then will you just slice each 1/4 in half to get the two end pieces? Or can you start with a smaller "corner" section and put two of those pieces together to get the look of the "triangles" on both ends? (Thinking out loud - trying to type as fast as I'm thinking....I hope it makes sense!)

Did some more research on this block. Like Quentin The Quilt said this block is Hearts and Gizzards....aka Dutch WindMill. For those who save magazines the pattern is in the August 1994 copy of American Patchwork and Quilting. Kathy

Why couldn't this be done by cutting the ends off a HST and swapping them for another center in contrasting color?
    I hope that makes sense....
