    Question about Hand Embroidery

I am working on a quilt that looks similar to the one in this picture. On my quilt I will not have the light colored blocks on the right half of the quilt. It will just be solid light gray along with the mortar between the bricks.

I am planning to hand embroidery a quote onto the gray area. The gray fabric is Kona solids. Will the fabric hold up okay as I do embroidery? Will it stretch in a hoop? Or if anyone has other ideas on how I should add the embroidered quote......just let me know.

Also...once I do the embroidery..........any one have ideas on how to quilt around that area?

I think if you hoop it, and don't pull extremely tight, it should be fine. Just don't pull anymore than you have to. Depending on how large the quote is, I would maybe do a small stipple around it, kind of following the curves of the words.

If its pieced, and you hoop it to embroider, it can't help but warp some. I would iron a lightweight stabilizer on the back first.

I agree a lightweight stabilizer would give you a smoother finish. It looks like a neat quilt. It will be interesting see what saying you come up with. Have fun.

Hi, This thread really caught my attention, so much so that I thought I could throw my two penny's worth in. I have started embroidering quote labels onto the backs of my quilts. In one corner I put the recipients name, mine and the year, and then in another corner I add the hand embroidered quote. If I knew how to add photos I would show you! But I think that this would get around your dilemma. Let me know what you think.

pcbatiks, am I right in thinking that you want to embroider on the front side of the quilt in your gray area? And I agree totally with putting a lightweight stabilizer before you embroider. Post a pic, please, when it's done. Looks like a neat quilt.

                Re: Question about Hand Embroidery

Pam, The Kona will hold up fine. It's a very sturdy fabric. Use a very lightweight backing to help with puckering and don't pull your embroidery stitches overly tight....try to stitch them on the surface where there are no spaces or loops but loose enough that they don't distort your fabric. There are 6 strands to emb thread. Pull out however many strands you want to use and lay them next to each other and then moisten them very lightly and smooth them with your fingers a few times and then thread your needle. Even tension is very important.

Embroidering on Kona Cotton will work well. You should not have any problems with hooping it. I've also created a few quilts using Hoffman Batiks in the past and they work beautifully as well. If you use an interfacing I'd suggest Pellon Shape Flex SF101 fusible.

Thanks again for the input. Guess I need to head back to the fabric store for stabilizer.
