1/2" seam is standard for a rag quilt. Using flannel as the batting will make it plenty 'raggy'.

The 1/2" seam is what Jenny used in her tut. for a rag quilt.

LOL not yet. I'm cutting 180 blocks for the inside first. I'm using flannel for the batting. I don't know why quilting math seems to challenge me so!

Did you also cut 180 squares for the back? Just want to make sure....

7" - 1/2" all the way around leaves you with a 6" finished block, not 5".

The easy way to figure it out would be that it would take 4 squares to make a 12" square block. Dividing 180 by 4 gives you 45 big blocks. a 6 by 7 layout would take 42 big blocks, with 3 left over (12 small squares)

So, layout your quilt 12 small squares across by 15 small squares down and you will use all 180 squares and your quilt will measure about 72" by 90"

Please could someone help me figure this out?

I want to make a rag quilt. I've cut 180, 7inch blocks for the front. According to the directions, I am going to sew them with a 1/2 inch seam allowance all the way around. So my finished block size will be 5 inches, right?

How do I figure out how many across and how many down?

I want to make the biggest quilt I can with the amount of fabric I have. Forgive me if this is a dumb question. Apparently I am mathematically challenged.

    Thank you for your help.
