    Summer quilt=no batting?

I am making a quilt for my king sized bed. I don't need it to add much warmth as I have a duvet already on the bed. I remember some forum members talking about summer quilts without batting or with very light weight batting. I was thinking of doing the top and then using a king sized flat sheet as the backing and not adding any batting. Has anyone tried this? I guess I would just quilt it as if it had batting?

I made a summer quilt just like any other quilt but without the batting. Worked fine for me and will probably do another one soon. I used quilting cotton for the backing as usual, but don't see why a sheet wouldn't work.

Yes, do this. Just wash the sheet first. My husband's grandmother made coverlets like this all the time using flannel sheets inside
and we are still using them!

A layer of flannel is what we have used for summer-weight blanket batting. Gram has used it for baby blanket batting for years. It's actually our favorite ones to use all year round.

So do you just turn both pieces "front sides together" and sew, leaving a hole to pull it "right side out"? Do you do minimal stitching to hold it together after you turn it? Would you be able to wash it in the washer after it's finished

I used a flannel sheet for batting in the one I made.

I have made a few summer quilts. I quilted them as if they had batting. Machine quilting is still relatively new to me and I used the opportunity to practice on these summer quilts. The quilting doesn't stand out as if there were batting but it is fun to do and does look nice. You could always tie it too. The first quilt I made this way I added a binding as I always do. That worked out fine. I've learned recently how to sew the front and back together facing each other, stitch around the quilt leaving an opening then turn the quilt out and stitch up the opening. It's always fun to try new techniques.

Just as an added note the summer quilts that I've made have all been scraps sewn onto foundation (muslin) and there were a lot of seams, plus the muslin. These quilts can be warm (and heavy if using small tiny scraps) even without the batting.

I have made many of these and I almost always use sheets for the backing. I prefer cotton sheets not polyester ones but have used both. I generally quilt and then bind. I have found that turning them inside out didn't make me as happy because the quilting gets caught up in them and they are not as smooth
