choosing color of thread and pattern- a Newbie

I am new to quilting.....64 year old male! Since Jan 1 of this year, I have made 6 quilts. This black and red bargello is my last creation. I am including photos of both sides, and also close-ups of both sides to give you a better idea of the fabric. The overall size is 70x90 inches. It is reversible. I am going to be taking it to a quilt store to be quilted by long-arm machine. My two questions are: 1. Thread color and 2. pattern. My gut is telling me to use a red thread throughout the quilt. I suppose black is also possible. Someone suggested using pure white or gray. And someone else said go with a variegated red-black thread. And someone else said a gold. I know that ultimately, it is up to me the artist. But is there a suggested process to go through in making this decision. And also, I suppose I could use one color on one side and a 2nd color on the other side. Since the back side has huge black borders, I think I need to use red. The second decision is choosing a pattern. The quilt store has hundreds of quilt designs on their computer. Are there any suggestions on what type and what size of pattern to use on something like this? What process does one take into consideration? Thanks for any input.

    First, welcome to the forum!

Ask yourself what you want the quilting to accomplish.
Gold thread will stand out - in my opinion that is the wrong choice as it would take away from the beauty of the quilt you made.
Dark charcoal will blend in fairly well with both colors.
Black will blend in as well.
Red will blend in but still show up as an accent in the wide black border, which could be a cool thing.

As for design, I am thinking maybe an all over swirl or even a simple meander, as your quilt has so much movement that you don't really want to take away from the design.

I am a big fan of bargellos and this is a beauty. Are you sure your long arm quilter can do a double sided bargello? I am asking because there will be so many seams which can be a problem. I would definitely ask if they have experience with a double sided bargello. I would hate to see such a stunning quilt damaged by the long arm quilting process.

I think the flame motif would be beautiful on this quilt.

Thread color is a very personal choice. I would take a spool of thread and spool it out over the quilt. Yards and yards of thread laid over the quilt. Pick the color that speaks to you.

Personally I would go with a red polyester thread, like Isacord. Based on my personal experiences I would not use a variegated thread on a bargello quilt. The two patterns will compete with each other. Let the beauty of the bargello shine through with a one color thread.

I would ask the LAQ her opinion, she knows what colors wouldn't work
and what thread colors would work the best for your quilt top.
Beautiful quilt. Welcome to the forum.

That is a stunning quilt! I agree that the LAer would be the first one to consult. I vote for red.

I usually decide by laying several colors out on the quilt to see which one looks best on all the colors. I puddle the thread to give it more of a quilted look. Also, your longarm quilter will probably have suggestions about color and quilting design.

As others have mentioned I usually spool some thread choices out on the quilt top and see which one seems to complement the quilt. A nice gray would work as well as the red or black and would blend well. You certainly jumped right in with your quilting! Your quilt is stunning. So stunning I would be really concerned about using it as a double sided quilt. I think it might be difficult to select a quilting pattern that complements both sides. You need to share when this is finished. It is beautiful.

Love, Love, Love this quilt, both sides. I too worry about it being double sided with so many seams on the front and the back. I agree you should consult with your Long Arm specialist.

Is that your Kanji in the center? All I can say is WOW! it is beautiful. As Karen said I think a simple meandering all over pattern would be best, or something with circles.

Thanks for everyone's input. The only reason I did the 2nd side (the diamond shape) because I had so many strips left over. (I'm very conservative with my fabric.) I had also seen someone else do something like this. I didn't know that sometimes this can be a problem with a long arm. We have an excellent long-armer in town, so I will run things by her. Personally, I call this quilt my "Red Dragon" quilt. So that is the Kanji for "Dragon" in the center of the back side. I followed a pattern for the front, but designed the back side by myself.
