    horizontal or vertical rows?

I have always sewn my rows together horizontally, but recently someone told me they had been in a class and they were told to sew them together vertically. Any opinions on sewing horizontal or vertical rows?? Thanks

Horizontal for me, thank you! I doubt I could keep a vertical column straight.

I always do the rows horizontally but there may be certain patterns better done vertically.

Would be interested to know if there is a reason why vertical rows would be better.

I had one quilt where the rows were sewn vertically. All the rest, I have sewn horizontally. I wonder if the rationale is that there would be less stress on the seams if the rows were vertical? However, I would think the quilting itself takes care of stress on the seams.

I did have an instructor who thought making nine patches with vertical rows was better than horizontal rows, but that was her personal preference.

My first vertical row quilt was a pattern direction. It didn't seem to be all that different.
But I do horizontal rows most of the time!

I too, usually do mine horizontally, except for the UFO I happen to be working on now. It's too long for my design wall & I didn't want to be going up & down a step stool a bajillion times. I decided to put it on the wall sideways & now I'm sewing the rows vertically. It's a one block wonder pattern & there are a ton of seams to match, hence its status as a UFO. LOL
As with so many things in quilting this is a personal preference thing.

I do not have any one way. Did not think it made any difference. I just do whatever works for what I am working on.

                    Re: horizontal or vertical rows?

I , too, sew my rows horizontally.....however, in the Quilting Academy Books the author shows you how to assemble the quilt tops in a specific order so that you can sew the entire top together in one sitting, then press the sew in the other direction. You don't clip the squares apart. It was a clever arrangement and fast and vertical first then horizontal..............but it was difficult to press as nicely. To each your own.......I will stick with multiple jumps up for the pressing and call it exercise!

I sew the second block in a row to the first, but chain stitch so in essence my rows are hooked together in columns. I add the next in the row, but all of the rows at once, chain stitching as I go. That way everything is hooked together for sewing the width. I find it to be easier that way. Hope all that makes sense.

Vertical. Saves time because it's chain piecing.

I am in the horizontal group. But really I do not understand why it would matter.

The sashed tumbler blocks we did worked best in vertical rows.
