Sewing room

Ladies, I am blessed to be able to design my own sewing room. But, I need some help from you all. What are the things you absolutely need to make your sewing time convenient? What can't you live without? What are your suggestions for placements of furniture? Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Actually it's something I don't have and really want to have....a very large table to back and batt my quilts on..... I really am too old to be on my knees trying to centre and straighten my quilt backing to the quilt top....Oh yes, lots of light too!!!

Terri, I was fortunate enough to be able to turn my attached garage into a sewing room. I was going to put a low loft carpet in it but after some research that would have been a stupid idea(pins and all) common scence really. I put down a light laminate flooring instead.I also re purposed my kitchen counter when we had it replaced and I used the old one on top of an antique dresser for my cutting table. Definitely lots of light. I have several light sources but I am always wanting it to be brighter.I have my main sewing machine in front of my window which works out great.I have pictures posted of my room in my albums. Make certain you allow for fabric storage (there are a lot of good ideas out there), a peg board to keep accessories close at hand, a cutting table, and a design wall.

Also, allowing enough room behind your machine, if you intend to do FMQ, to have another table top to help support larger quilts.

Make sure you can walk around your table. Mine is tucked into a corner and it's a PITA sometimes. Also--good lighting.

Check my album to see my quilt room. My husband made everything to accomodate my hobby. The "CUTTING TABLE / IRONING CENTER" - is made to fold down on both ends by the usage of piano hinges & it can then be rolled against a wall. The HEIGHT OF YOUR WORK TABLE is very important. We don't need aching backs ! LIGHTING - good lighting is major! Once he installed a strip of light above my cutting table, I was thrilled. Good to have an EXTENDED TABLE behind a sewing machine. It's most beneficial when quilting with layers. Outlets - several on each wall . A WINDOW - for daydreaming & sunlight. SPOOL RACKS - necessary. I also keep spools of thread in large, glass jars. Space for a COMPUTER & PRINTER. STORAGE - lotsa shelving & a closet & maybe even a t.v. to watch when doing tedious stitching. Also a comfortable OFFICE CHAIR and a FAN . Hope I've helped.

Bella Quilts & Carol Ann, thank you so much for all the info! The Murphy Bed was already an idea my husband and I are working on but instead of a table I'm going to make it my design wall. Carol Ann your many suggestions and pictures are wonderful. It's strange, it's almost exactly how I have mine pictured in my head! Thank you all for so much help. Whenever the room is done I will post pictures.

If the sky is the limit, I'd suggest a flat screen small TV mounted on the wall beyond your sewing table. I watch MSQ videos and other quilt videos while I strip piece, and it's amazing how much I pick up each time I watch/listen to them! One of the best things I ever did!

The one thing I would dearly love is a design wall to preview the placement of blocks before sewing them into rows. I have seen several renditions of this lately: One was a pull down screen type flannel 'wall' that raised and lowered like a window shade. I also saw sliding closet doors that were padded and wrapped in flannel. I would love an 8x8 foot area that was permanent. What a joy that would be!!! The other members have covered all my other 'must haves'! Congratulations on your new quilting studio!!! Barb

I don't have a 'sewing room' but I am like you..... my mind is full of the things I'd love to have. The large table....... the one for batting ..... etc...... how about some drawers there for scissors and rotary cutters..... and rulers. I have a friend who uses those huge glass jars (sold at Wmart for flour... anyway the biggest ones) for scraps and they are so pretty and colorful on the shelves. I agree.... you need a tv..... lol.

I would love a design wall to preview my blocks before I sew them together. It's hard to get the right perspective when you lay them on the floor or on the bed. My DH is willing to hook me up in his hunter's safety rig and suspend me via pulley over my quilt blocks like a giant spider, but so far I've resisted the offer!! Seriously, I think a design wall would be a wonderful addition to your new quilting studio. Barb
