Don't like Y-seams or L-seams for that matter

Has anyone of you made this pattern?
Urbanista Quilt - FREE SEWING & QUILT PATTERNS - GET INSPIRED

Yes, they have instructions but they are not clear to me. If I do not want to cut up the rectangles surrounding the center square then I must accept the fact that it would require L-seams (I made that word up). Any ideas? My head is in a knot. Please help.

If you sewed the sashing around the smaller pieces differently, there would be no tricky seams.

Those instructions are not at all clear. I think what they want is a Partial Seam. Not hard. You can find how to by Googling.

I love this pattern, but like you avoided it because of the seams. Wish I had an easier idea for you.

Couldn't it be done using Jennys flower box? Phoebe's Flower Box Quilt - Quilting Made Easy - YouTube

I didn't mean use her tute but the way she does the sashing.

Eleanor Burns has a tutorial on this also. I've done it for practice, and it isn't at all difficult, just one little step right before the last seam. I think her Hole In The Wall pattern uses this technique.

I think this pattern has a few issues. I couldn't see the picture they were referring to with the "arrow", possibly a page missing, and I believe there is a typo...here: - top sewing 1/4” from the end of the square. I think that should have said "STOP sewing 1/4" from the end of the square."
