    Batik pronunciation...

How do you pronounce the word "batik"?

    ♦ Bat-ihk?

    ♦ Bah-teek?

    ♦ Something else entirely?

I rarely hear this word spoken as I assume a lot of us are unsure of our pronunciation and don't want to look foolish in front of other quilters. Personally, I am in the bat-ihk category. I understand that probably isn't how they pronounce it in Javanese but since I don't speak Javanese I pronounce it the way it looks like it should be spoken if it were an English word.

I say Bah-teek, its how I have always heard it pronounced working in the fabric stores. But this may differ from where your located to your accent.

I pronounce it buh-teek. I won't sweat it too much because I've heard someone pronounce a word differently than I do, thought maybe I was wrong, but looked it up and I was pronouncing it correctly. DH watches a lot of the sci-fi channels....and one night I looked at him and said are they just changing the pronounciation of words so they sound cool?

I pronounce it buh-teek. I have no idea if that is correct. I've never heard it pronounced before.

                  Before you speak,
                  T - is it TRUE?
                  H - is it HELPFUL?
                  I - is it INSPIRING?
                  N - is it NECESSARY?
                  K - is it KIND?

                    Tomato - toe-may-toe or toe-ma-toe?
                    envelope - in-vel-ope or on-vel-lope?
either - ee-ther or ii-ther? or if we go by the rules aa-ther you know i before e except when sounding as a.
All depends on where you are from. Like I grew up say warsh instead of wash - how in the world did that r sound get into the wash!

Oh - to answer your question - I pronounce it the second way - only because it's easier for me to say.

Thanks for asking this question! I didn't know which way was right either but was too embarrassed to ask...lol! I've been pronouncing just like Ryan...guess I'm going to have to train myself to the other way.... hope no one takes offense to this but the bah-teek sounds kinda snooty..to me anyways. I've heard it pronounced this way on a few videos on youtube and wasn't sure what they were talking about.... guess I'm just a little bit redneck..

I use the second one you listed. But I also come from an area where my mom would say "I'm goin' to warsh my clothes and after I wrench them I will clean my jew-ler-y and stick it in an INvelop (emphasis on first syllable).
                        WHATTT!!!

I grew up in Asia and have always heard/said it the Bah-teek way. I guess as long as the person your talking to knows what your talking about you're ok.

I was pronouncing it wrong until a snooty instructor didn't like my buh-teeks (yes maple leaf one)....and I thought well you can just bat-tik this. Another one...until I heard it on a video was Janome.....I thought it was Jan-om and then I heard them say Jan-om-e and that is the reason I buy Brother machines....I know how to say Brother.

Hahaha! How stupid did you feel when you realized they pronounced the e? I learned by a sewing machine guy correcting me. My response "Well that's just stupid."
