    Opinions on Quilting Stencils

Have many of you used the stencils to help you with quilting? And those who do, how well do they work? I would think it would be easier than FMQ, especially when one is not well practiced with FMQ or one who has trouble with it. I think I will be able to get it after much practice, since I am artistic, but you never know.

I use stencils all the time. Depending on the pattern stencil you choose , you can sew *Regular* but often id the turns are sharp I still FMQ it. Just makes it easier having a pattern drawn out. I get lost in 2 inches otherwise and don't know how to get out. LOL

Which stencils do you use? I am interested in trying. Do you pounce it or trace it with a pen/pencil?

I use them too, both traced or pounced....depends on what I am doing and also what the pattern is.

I think using stencils and your darning foot with out use of feed dogs is just as hard as FMQ. You still have to be totally in control of the speed of your hands and stitch length to not get the same problems as you would with FMQ. IMO

I like using stencils, the ceremic pencil and pounce. I also find drawings on web images and print them out, punch holes and pounce. I usually add something to them like lines and curls or something. Its fun i have of course not done much of it, but I like the process so will keep on

                Re: Opinions on Quilting Stencils

I like using stencils because I can pay more attention to my speed and stitch length and less attention to the design since I have a pattern to follow. I have traced and also use pounce. But this said, it still takes practice for it all to come together and look good.

Thanks so much everyone for sharing your opinions on them and your experiences. I think the main part it would help me with is knowing where to go without having to think to quick. I think once I get a few patterns down with FMQ I would be fine in this area. The only thing I was unsure on is how to place the stencils in order to make it look smooth as it would with someone that FQ really well. Placing them, marking, and replacing and marking and so on. I will dabble with it and see how it does for me, but first on a sample quilt. There is a template/stencil class on Craftsy that I almost joined but it looked like maybe it was focusing on border templates and not so much the main part of the quilt, but I am not sure.

I think the Pacific Fabrics in Bremerton carries stencils. And if the Hancocks is still up in West Bremerton, so do they.

                            Re: Opinions on Quilting Stencils

I've used continuous line stencils on quilted clothing. Either a Pfaff 1475 or 2170. Did them using an open toe foot, feed dogs up, and IDT using triple straight stitch. Pain in the neck but easier to pivot with needle down.

I can FMQ, and have Babylock Quilt works, and some Pfaff quilting patterns plus EQ5 so I have plenty of pattern stencils. I can print out and pounce or use paper and trace. I prefer having something to follow, also.

I have several stencils in my stash, but I rarely use them. Initially, I used them to practice following the lines. I used the blue marking pens to mark the lines. (It washes out in cold water.) Now I pretty much always just do FMQ without them. JCY
