Layer Cake and charm packs = How much yardage?

This question has probably been answered before but since many of Jenny's patterns call for layer cakes or charm packs it's difficult to know how much they equal in yardage. I really love scrappy quilts but sometimes I want to make a quilt with just 2 or 3 fabrics. May in Jersey

May, here is something I saw online and wrote down as a reference for myself.

1yard of fabric yields approx. 56 charm squares, and 1 layer cake is approx. 2 3/4 yards.
I have not tried this just saw it online.

    Additional info-
    1/4 yard= 8 charm squares
    1 fat quarter= 12
    1/2 yard= 24
    3/4 yard= 40
    1 yard= 56

Thanks Cathy, shouldn't have waited until the last minute as I'm leaving for Lancaster in the morning.
