What is the best Free Motion Quilting Video Tutorial ??

Ok, I am going to try FMQing again. I tried and tried about a year ago and finally gave up. I have a different machine to play around on now, so maybe I should try again.

So, I need a good video (I am a visual learner) but I am really a newbie at FMQing. A newbie, newbie.

What video online do you suggest?

Many people enjoy Leah Day's videos. I haven't tried her out yet, but I intend to.

There are so many, not sure about best ... Leah Day comes to mind, but then she shows you on small sandwiches, not full sized quilts. I watched what I could find, read what I could find and finally just said "I've got to try it to learn." I think one of the best things I did that really gave me the confidence to finally put one of my quilt tops at risk was to sandwich about a yard or yard and a half of fabric with batting and an old sheet, a good sized sandwich to work with and just go for it. I was able to learn on a larger piece, feel what it was like to shove more than a placemat size piece of fabric through my machine, etc. The bonus - my dogs have a new quilt that they love.

Leah Day has a really good video on modifying a darning foot for FMQ. This modification does work....I tried it.

Many people refer to Leah Day's tutorials, but I have yet to see anyone recommend Patsy Thompson's. In the YouTube search box enter "free motion quilting." Patsy has 4 beginner tutorials which are easy to follow. She also offers free downloads of her various loop-d-loop patterns on her web site. Check out her info. JCY

                  Hi,
I can't recommend highly enough the Craftsy class by Wendy Butler Berns called Machine Quilting: Free Motion and More. I am a complete FMQ beginner and have been working through this class, and it is excellent. Wendy comes across as very encouraging, helpful and patient which is just what I need!! Well worth the $!

Can't beat a 'live' class if you can do one at your LQS. I did one with a popular and talented quilter from South Australia and learnt so much in 4 hours. After that I caught up with Leah Day's online free classes for more ideas.

She's won many prizes and is exhibiting at Paducca this year.

Here's what I did after just one lesson (and plenty of practice)

Leah Day has some really good videos both on her website and You Tube, but Angela Walters is also very good. They have different styles of teaching, so you might want to check them both out on You Tube to see who you like better. Leah Day's designs tend to be more advanced, while Angela Walters classes are just good, basic FMQ stitches, but not just plain ole stippling. I leanred a lot from both and have so much more confidence in myself and my FMQ abilities. The other thing about FMQ is practice, practice, practice. Have fun, pour a fresh cup of coffee or tea, find you a comfy spot, and just watch some YouTube for a while -- you'll be inspired before you know it and your FMQ will take off!

I just took a FMQ class at the LQS yesterday and it was great. I'm not really new at it, but I hated it and was never happy with result. My instructor was great, mainly at building confidence. One thing she did was have me take off the needle, then she taped a marker to the machine and had me practice with it on a piece of paper before I started sewing. She encouraged doodling a lot as you watch TV, etc to get the muscle memory. She also recommended keeping a good size 12" or so by WOF quilt sandwich by the machine to practice on before you start a project. She had a number of other tips, too. S
                        Good luck!

I'm another Leah Day fan. I've been away from quilting for a while, and I feel she's brought me back to the quilting world with a new focus. AND...she gives permission - in fact recommends - pressing seams OPEN! I love her for that. She has tons of great videos. I have just scratched the surface.
