Beginner Quilter - First quilt suggestions

Hi everyone, I am just beginning and would love some suggestions on what I should do for a first quilt. I am up for a challenge. Thanks

I started with a table runner of my own free form design. But you could do a couple different block patterns just to learn them and then put them together into a table runner or wall hanging. It's big enough to learn skills on but small enough to manage. Good luck. Show us pictures of what you end up with.

I got a sewing machine for my husband. Good trade, huh!?!

      Hi Robin,
Why not try a disappearing 9 patch. I love them!!

Re: Beginner Quilter - First quilt suggestions

I'm only into quilting for a couple of years now, but would suggest something small to start out with. As suggested by Nancy, a couple of squares to get the hang of the piecing, etc and then putting them together into something small, like a table runner. When you are ready to do a bigger quilt, start with a wall hanging or baby size quilt. But then, some people enjoy the challenge of tackling a big project from the git-go...whatever is your comfort level. The tutorials on MSQC are really good, too. Good luck and keep us posted!

Do you have a local quilt shop? I went to a T-shirt quilt class as a clueless beginner and the teacher was fantastic, other students were fun and I loved the whole experience! My LQS has all kinds of classes...table runners, one day projects, block of the month, new quilting techniques for a big quilt and new classes added all the time. The support of the teacher helped me from becoming frustrated and quiting. In eight months I have made two big quilts, two baby quilts for charity ( another class I attend), 4 table runners and a big tote for my daughter for college. I signed up for both of Jenny's quilting sympoz classes and find she makes me confident to do anything she is making!! Good luck and enjoy the process. Dianne

The first quilts I did were kits that were already pre-cut, then I tried kits that I had to cut the fabric and then I fly solo. LOL! My first quilts are in my Album. The first "solo" quilt was a doozy. I only started quilting in January when I was laid off for three months (starting Dec 1) and had to find a hobby that didn't create calories (baking & bread making).

I agree with mlt150, Jenny's tutorials were great and then the quilting sympox classes are even better.

I really like the quilt in this tutorial. It's quick and easy and you can use jelly rolls or yardage depending on what you have handy. You can set it out like this or play around to make zig zags and all sorts of patterns.

Re: Beginner Quilter - First quilt suggestions

I made a Pancake Quilt for my first...and that batting in the thing made it so heavy, we have to take the quilt to the laundry mat and use the industrial machine to wash it. (Queen size when I finished it). It is the pooh quilt on my blog in the "my quilts" section (read the top line for the page).

So I'm with the other gals.. start with a small project just to get a feel for the process, weight and color combos!! (Not that I listen to my own advise, since I did a starburst and Love knot as my next quilts )

I agree that keeping it simple will give you some experience and feel for the piecing and putting the blocks together. Precut squares or charm packets are a good beginner project.
